Alright when are we going to see some pics I saw a set of these on a pickup the other day they looked good.

they're in the back of the runner - same place they've been since sunday...

i just haven't had the time to get to a reputable shop.

i called up the local wally-world last night and they said "no problem, bring it down" so i dropped it off at 5:45pm and they said it would be ready at 8:00pm - when they closed for the night. i called at 7:40, and they said they would have it done in 20-min. i show up and 8:00pm on the nose and NOTHING was done. i confronted the "manager" and he said he couldn't do it since they were so much larger than what was on there. we argued, and i basically called a spade a spade. i told him that i thought that they were just lazy and didn't want to take the 45-min to an hour to do the job and was hiding behind his PC bullcrap to get out of there on time when i had already been told that they would mount them. long story short- he referred me to the GM as he was closing up shop - and by that point, i wouldn't have wanted to give them one red cent anyway.

tomorrow afternoon, i'll drop it off at a local mom-&-pop that i use (they were too busy to get to it yesterday) and leave it overnight if i have to (they'll store it inside).

Andy im assuming you got your arms shaved, or are you gonna use spacers for a little while? Im interested to see how these look.

 

haven't done them yet. they shouldn't rub on the street, only on heavy bumps on the street. i'm just getting the tires mounted and then i'm planning on shaving the arms one evening next week.

 

I can't wait to see them you will have to take pics because I never see you around. Whats up with that?

 

Ordered mine today... Should be getting them on the 26th. I also would like to see how these looks on yours Andy! Im sure its gonna look awesome! I ordered 305/70's for now since i dont plan on going much bigger yet. When are they going to be put on?

balancing will be via airsoft pellets. about 3.5-4oz in each tire.

 

I dont know if you want to go that way... Airsoft pellets are not very dense and it will take close to 1900 of the .12g pellets, about 1300 of the .2g pellets and 900 of the .25 gram pellets. I just ordered my dynabeads which should be much quieter when coming to a stop as well as are very small and denser to spread out better. It was 10 bucks a tire for the easy open baggies that you just throw in when you mount them.

I got two 900-pellet bottles of the .2G weight.

for ~3 ounces per tire, it will take approx 450 pellets. pour a half-bottle of the .2G pellets in each tire and it should be fine.

my math:

450 pellets * 0.2 gr each = 90 grams per tire

90 grams = .1984 lbs = 3.17 ounces

another alternative that i've considered is to use some #9 lead shot - about 5-6 ounces per tire.

 

why are you choosing to balance your tires this way?

 

the rocks on the trails chew up the weights on the lip of the wheels, and they will fall off or break off.

the stick on weights don't do much for such a huge (heavy) tire either. ~55# each.

it's called "dynamic balancing"... read up on it.

 

3.17 ounces is nowhere near enough weight for that size tire especially with its agressive tread. Do what you want, but I am using 6-8 ounces of beads on a 305. You should use between 6-8 as well and definitely NO less than 4... At 4 ounces i expect you will still see some vibration at highway speed unless the tires and wheels happen to be very well balanced to start. Go to the website i posted above. They have weight applications for our size tires.

 

Is this required for the MTZs? I am considering these when I replace my tires this summer, and I want to make sure I understand the tire's requirements.

no, it's NOT required for ANY tire, but is an option as an alternative to the typical methods for balancing tires.

The idea is that with aggressive treads on tires, they are hard to balance once they start to wear. For example, say you chunk a tire on the trail one day. This will throw off the conventional balancing method since the weights are stationary and cannot fix the problem. With internal dynamic balancing, the beads/weights are internal and spread themselves using centrifical force and are constantly moving and adapting to maintian a perfect balance.
