Recommend me some excellent sand tires!

I need some recommendations for tires that can handle extremely well in very soft sand. The places I go fishing/hunting are trails with a lot of them being very very soft sand and/or rocky downhill/uphill. I need tires that will get me in and about without the need of being worried about getting stuck somewhere where help isn't around. Driving is 60% highway 40% offroad. This is also my daily driver so something quiet would also be nice. Treadlife is also very important. I don't want to or I don't really have the money to blow on new tires every 2-3 years. Tire size I am looking at are 33x12.5x15.

That is a good tire.

Also see Baja Claws or the Bias variant.

I run the BFG ATs in 33x12.50-15 and they are great in the sand, a little hard to turn without re-gearing but I make do. I have some really slopy silt/sand on the beach I run on and they float right over that. Its hard to see and you can hit patches of it from a foot wide to 100 yards across, not much trouble with these tires.

The very best tire in soft sand is a 3/4 worn street tire with a wide profile. A tire like a Michelin X 265/70/16 is perfect. Air it down to 12-15 pounds and that's as good as it gets.

On soft sand you do not want an agressive tread, it will dig in. For soft sand you want one thing only, the ability to reduce ground pressure. You do that with a normal tread pattern and airing down.

I know that's not "cool" and doesn't put the latest super tire on your rig, but trust me. This is comes from decades of experience as a surf fisherman.

I live in florida, and most of the trails around here are sugar sand. I agree that too agressive of a tire will do nothing more than dig a hole, fast.

Having said that, hands down the best tire you will find commonly will be the BF Goodrich All Terrain TA/KO. This is waht was on my truck when I bought it. I hated them with a passion. They did absolutely wonderfully in sand. My biggest problem with them was that when I got into MUD, they did nothing more than turn into big slicks. They don't clean themselves unless you bounce off the rev limiter and REALLY spin them up. But in the sand, they were absolutely awesome.

For best of both worlds, stick with your standard "old school" style BFG mud terrain style tire. Buckshots, Pro Comp mud terrain, Dunlop mud rover, etc. Good floatation over sand, but will clean when you need them to.

The Dune Grappler™ Desert Terrain was designed for enthusiasts who spend time on pavement and desert trails. The unique flamed tread block was engineered for desert performance. The contact patch and moderate void ratio offer balanced traction in varying desert terrain. The construction strengthens the sidewall to improve puncture resistance and the tread pattern minimizes road noise to provide a comfortable and civilized ride. For on-road performance, the Dune Grappler™'s tread blocks are connected by bridges to prevent flex and provide stability. Select sizes are available in higher load ratings to meet heavyweight truck demands. The Dune Grappler™ is engineered to be tough - both on and off the pavement.

On and Off-road Performance: Dune Grappler

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dune Grappler

The Nitto Dune Grappler is based on the award winning technology of the Nitto Terra Grappler. The Dune Grappler is designed for the enthusiast that spends time on pavement and desert trails.

When the tire needs to be taken off-road, the tread pattern and large contact patch allow the tire to float over loose gravel and sand. The Dune Grappler also has large sidewall lugs and triple- reinforced sidewall construction to help prevent sidewall punctures.

The unique tread pattern reduces on-road noise that you normally get with aggressive off-road tires. It also has strengthened tread blocks that give the tire high-speed stability.

Select sizes are available in higher load ratings for towing.

I actually was pretty happy with my Mickey Thompson Baja Claws during the week I spent rallying around Oregon at Dune Fest. never got stuck once, or near to being stuck. Just couldn't get up some dunes, mostly do the lack of 22re power.

Why? Not manly enough?

I personally don't care at all what the tire looks like, as long as it works for what I want it to do. Flames, bones, skulls, M-16 bullets, tread blocks in the shapes of Texas and California or someone's initials, who cares? If it gets me up the hill, then it's a winner in my book!

Yes, there are tires these days with all of those on them. I didn't make any of those features up.

Back on topic, another poster hit it on the head, its all about ground pressure. ANY tire that is 12.5 inches wide an ANY pattern on a toyota will do great in the sand.
