Re-gearing to 4.30 a good idea?
Hi All, a quick question about re-gearing. I have a stock 86 4Runner with a 22RE & 5 Speed tranny, currently running 31's. I have the opportunity to pick up some 4.30 gears for a pretty good price, and am just trying to figure out if its a skook idea to do this swap from the stock 4.10's. Am thinking on going to 32's and the possibility of a rear locker when all is said and done. This truck is primarily going to be used for a daily driver, with weekends spent up the local forestry roads camping & exploring. Any ideas & input are appreciated.

I don't think the 31's were oem on it, they were just put on by the previous owner a few months ago.
I got the "4.10 stock gearing" from here http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ is there a way to figure this out for sure?

No, I'm saying that if you want to run 31's you should look for some 4.56 diffs.
NOTE: this is not to say that you wouldn't notice the effect of one ratio change - you certainly will! For me, going from 4.56 to 4.88 for 33's was NIGHT AND DAY.
Fact of the matter is that you will probably want to go even bigger in the future, no reason to regear to only still be undergeared...

Yeah it probably depends on how cheap you're talking on the gears (and setup also) If you drop $2-300 on setup and $xx for the gears and you're still undergeared... On the other hand if you can get gears for 50 bucks and you/friend/dad can put 'em in confidently, then sure, what the heck. Another member here got them as he wants to compromise between 31's on the trail (a bit undergeared) and 28/29's in the winter. (a bit overgeared) but gained an e locker in the deal too.

So I went out and checked the VIN plate, and truck is listed as having had 225's as OEM tires. And the price for the gears is @ $60..... so its looking more like a good idea methinks.

Is that for just the gears or setup diffs?
Because if you're buying master install kits and paying for install, getting the better ratio gears will be a drop in the bucket, especially to not have to do it again later...

As it turns out the gears are for a V6, so will there be any issues with compatibity? Am starting to think that maybe I should hold off & get some lower gearing (like 4.88) from the shop.

if its a used stock front diff & rear 3rd swap on the cheap...go for it. if youve got to re&re, and setup w/ install kits etc... might as well get lower gears.

Gearing vs. tires aside, another reason not to use 4.30's is that there are NO after market suppliers for this ratio.
I know from experience...I've blown 3 sets of 4.30's.
