I just use a cheepy window sill style cup holder shut in the door of my glove box, works for me. And there is room for an extra, in case the misses would like one too!!

That is probably the one thing i hate about both my 4runners, no cup holders! I just open the center console an stick it in there, works good until i accelerate or take a turn to fast an i spill my drink everywhere...

I was thinking of fab'ing up a fiberglass console based on the factory one, but adding 2 cup holders, a radio bay for my ham radio and a cooling fan for the radio.
So far, as far as cup holders are concerned, a 20 oz bottle / lid has worked best for me over the years.
For now, my worries and heartache are over the rotted out driver floor pan - it's rotted out around the body mount and I have a grapefruit size hole. At least I can see how deep the mud is and whether my tire is flat or not WITHOUT opening the door and getting out.

first gen cup holders!
I have an '86 4runner, and it's got the triangular vent windows. the easiest solution I've come up with for this problem is to get some water bottle holders from a peddle bike, and just hang these from the handle of the vent windows.
this works better than any factory cup holder i've ever seen, for the simple reason that it doesn't ever spill! no matter what (or who) you drive over. I don't have a picture, but you'll figure it out. (just mug some kid on a CCM to get the water bottle holder!) haha j/k

Found this pic of an integrated cup holder on an 85 4runner.

Not sure how it was done. Looks like maybe the center con was pushed back...?

I had a local fab shop weld a cupholder/tray set up similar the one pictured below. Not too expensive, either. He knows the Toyota platforms pretty well and can probably modify the design he made for me (94 p/u) to fit any Toyota rig.
I don't have a file sharing account and can't post pics (unless they're really, really small). If anyone's interested, PM me and I'll e-mail you pics of what I have.
