cool. thanks for the help. I want to replace the stock sending unit as well since it doesnt function well, looks really old and I'm going to be draining the coolant anyways. I looked on the Autozone site and I'm a little confused. They have 2 products listed. One is a coolant temp sensor and the other is temp switch. The stock sending unit looks like the temp switch. Where does the coolant temp sensor go? Isn't there only one temp sensor for the 2.4l's?
Temp Switch:

There are 2 temp sensors below the TB: The one for the ECU, and the other one called the 'cold start time switch"(even though it's a temp sensor) which controls fast idle when cold. The 3rd temp sensor for the gauge, as has been stated, is the one on the thermostat deck, mid engine.

When I got my used 87, there was an extraneous temp (looking) sender sitting on top of the valve cover, just laying there. Poked around under the hood and could not find a place to install it. Found the gauge sender installed where it belongs and nothing else was within reach of the wire attached to it. But, alas, one day it came loose and fell out from under the hood on the road. Now I have a bare wire in its place. Pulled it up over the TB so it would be easier to see.
I've been debating whether I should replace it ... of course, not knowing what it was would make it difficult.

i am pretty sure ( i cant see it anyways) that is the wire for the one that is drilled on top of the inlet tube or the one just above the thermostat. It looks like yours isn't there or just wasn't drilled. its either that or the one further back in the mid engine.
