i have an 87 4 runner that runs decent but every now and then while driving it spudders and the check engine light comes on. sometimes while sitting at red lights or even sometimes when i start it, it doesnt want to stay running and takes a while to get going...kinda seems like a fuel problem but im not 2 positive..any inputs would be appriciated, thanks.

you may want to look for vacuum leaks, idle air control may be dirty, your mass air flow meter may be having an issue. i know mine did, the truck would barely move sometimes. the only way to really test your fuel pump is to mount a gauge to monitor fuel pressure while your engine runs. also check the voltage of your battery. engines run bad when the voltage gets real low, 10.5 volts & under is bad. 13.5 when running is normal.these are just general suggestions because viewing your post does not tell us mileage, engine, last tune-up. just try simple things to see if that helps the problem. look at your air filter and work your way to the motor. maybe also a clogged cat. convertor. the motor has a hard time hoffing out the exhaust at low rpms and it runs better with more pressure and heat. a glowing cat after driving ten miles is a great indicator. hope this helps. any more details would help.
