CV Boots

Alrite, i just turned my truck in for a japanese inspection, and i got a call saying they need to replace the cv boots for the 4wd...so i couldnt really understand him, but i told him to go ahead and do it. i was curious to see if anyone knew if that was an expensive job or not, i know its different from the states compared to japan, but anyone know if thats a hard job and requires alot of labor? thanks for any and all input.....

I've never heard of ANYWHERE replacing CV boots as part of an inspection. The labor is the expensive part. Here in the U.S., it's usually around $500 to have all four replaced.

CV boots are a PITA to install, I think it will be pretty expensive. You could have replaced the entire CV's yourself cheaper.

The boots only need to be replaced if they're torn and allowing grease to leak out. The boots themselves come in a kit (approx $60-$80 gives you both boots and the grease for one CV... If they're doing both CV's, you'd need two kits.) To rebuild properly, each CV will take 2 to 3 hours.

The OP said JAPANESE inpsection....

The rules are waaay different over there.

The SHORT answer is that hte inspections are DESIGNED TO FORCE PEOPLE TO BUY NEW CARS.

As understand it at some range (7 years?) the entire bake system needs to be replaced. Not - ispect for leaking hose etc - REPLACED.

Its why you can get low milage engines here in the USA - they ship the cars over seas because the cars are no longer cost effective to keep licensed on the road in Japan.

ok so he called me back today, 15,000 yen to replace the cv boots, which came out to about 140 bucks, not to bad, but instead of calling me asking for my stock lights he took gasoline and scraped all the paint off of all my lights...i cant believe, all that work for nothing, guess i will have to go buy more paint and redo it...
