Timing doesn't change when jumpered

22re. I've been trying to get this 22re to run right. It has a slight hesitation off idle and an intermittant miss at any rpm.

verified vacuum lines and can't find a vacuum leak, 135 compression on all cylinders. I calibrated the tps and followed all the checks. One thing I just noticed is base timing doesn't change when the connector is jumpered. I'll set the timing at 5 with the connector jumpered and then remove the jumper there is no change. I have tried a spare TPS i had laying around and no change. The computer will flash codes if I unplug a sensor through the check engine light when jumpered so the connector shouldn't be bad.

No codes with all the sensors hooked up and running.

My next plan was to run through the tps checks at the ECU to verify I'm not getting a bag signal from the 4 wires at the ECU. Anyone have any other ideas on why this is happening?

I verified that the signal was making it to the ECU. Any ideas on where to go next?

What is your IDL-E2 reading with the throttle closed?

recheck your TPS. sounds like the ECM is not seeing the IDL contacts close.

I just recalirated for probably the 5th time. Still won't bypass ECU advance when jumpered.

IDL E2 at idle and no shim is 150 Ohms

I could be doing something wrong when I calibrate, but All the checks are within spec.

Pulling my hair out!

And are you getting that same reading at the ECU connector?

If so, see if you can swap in a different ECU.

Or else, skip the test jumper and use ~12 BTDC for the timing setting.

got a couple Manual ECUs this runner is a Auto. Thought about just swapping ECU to see what happens. Will this work?

I just ran the check, but I will verify resistance at ECU pinouts and compare to the TPS pins and post again

meh, just jumper it, then slowly turn the TPS until the idle drops by 50 rpms.

Here's what I got

Shim Connector TPS ECU

0 IDL - E2 230 270
0 VTA -E2 680 719
.57mm IDL - E2 230 210
.85mm IDL - E2 Inf Inf
WOT VTA - E2 4.7K 4.69K
n/a Vcc - E2 5.3K 5.3K

Any other ideas? Can I swap an a manual computer into an auto truck to try another ECM? tried cranking up the timing to 12 BTC and still lightly hesitates and misses misses. WTF?

1. Readings look good per the FSM.

2. Try it and see.

3. Try something between 12 and 5 BTDC.

Are you sure you're getting a good connection with your jumper tool of choice? I couldn't get my rpm's to change using a paper clip. It wasn't making good metal to metal contact. So I used some speaker wire and put some connectors on each end that were a little wider than the paper clips and made a snug fit. Using that wire I made a good connection and was able to get the rpm's to change.

still can't get it to change. Just swapped ECU's and coil/crap on top of the coil. still hesitates. advanced manually to 12 btc still hesitates timing doesn't change when jumpered? I know I'm getting a good jumper bc I can read codes through the check engine light

If the engine is running and you insert the diagnostic jumper, does the idle change?

Where are you located?

And, does your check-engine light flash when you jumper the diagnostic connector?

located in san antonio. Yes, the check engine light flashes when jumpered. 1 flash about every 5 seconds

check-engine light flash means that the ECM sees that you've jumpered the diagnostic connector.

try turning the TPS with the jumper connected, and listen for an idle change, then lock down the TPS at that exact point.

The TPS on the 85 22re doesn't control the tranny. I believe there's a throttle valve cable for the auto tranny. So the ecu should be ok. If I am wrong please chime in.

My valves were adjusted too tight and it affected idle. You might check the intake with a vacuum gauge to see if there's also something wrong with the valves. For vacuum testing see:
