This is killing me... when I start my truck on cold mornings I get a horrible sound, a rotational scraping/ whirring sound. One of my pullies in previous times had a bad whining, although this is a different sound, and it was fixed as soon as I sprayed lubricant on each pully. I guess I am trying to determine what belt driven item is making this sound... any suggestions on norrowing down the options? None of the pullies have a super distinct warble, and I thought I would try lubricant on each individual pully to see on which one it would quiet the sound, and some how it wasn't obvious. What is odd although, the sound goes away once it warms up or if the temperture isn't too bad (it has been negetives in the morning, or single digets.

Our old plow truck which is an 80 does a sound like this as well. Its from the power steering pump. Its done this for along time and it doesn't leak and always works. My 82 didn't do it but it did not have power steering either. Just an idea.

X2 on the power steering pump. I have an 83 and the power steering makes this vibrating/shaking sound when i start up the truck. usually it doesnt happen right away but takes about 10 or 15 seconds then it starts and goes for about 10 seconds and gets consistently louder than goes away. It comes back every now and then but happens almost everytime i start the truck, especially cold. My power steering quite randomly spits fluid out on the rare occasion but for the most part does not leak and functions normally so I dont think its a big deal. But a power steering pump isnt a huge deal anyway. Hope that helps.

Sounds like mine too, I've heard the noise but never checked what it was. The worst thing about the cold here is speedos/tachs not working. When it's -40 out they make a really loud annoying whining sound untill warmed up a bit. Happens to a few vehicles I've driven and owned.

Yeah I had that happen on my '86 when it dropped to -30 here one winter. The speedometer cable was screaming as I drove to work.

I was thinking it could be my power steering too, becuause it just seemed like the sound was coming from that area... It sounds bad enough to make me worry altough.

Yeah if it's making a lot of noise and it's your daily driver, it's time to fix it. I only had something like that happen once and it was before I worked much on my own vehicles and all I remember after getting it fixed is that it was a pulley. It started doing it almost constantly, though, warm or cold. Happened after I drove through a mud puddle and didn't clean things off...

Wow. Just listened... that is it- to the "t". So I guess I got my solution. What do you think, replace the ps pully or flush the ps fluid?

How longs it make the noise for? Ours doesnt do it very long and hasn't ever faultered. Just drive the thing once it stops making noise.

Mine actually doesnt do it very much anymore, and its even colder than when that video was taken. It did it earlier today and yesterday after my friend had to jump start me. Make sure the idle pulley on the PS belt system isnt rubbing against the bracket its on. Try flushing the PS system too. I haven't fixed mine, but I'm not too worried. I've gone 2 weeks with no PS last year and it wasn't that bad, so if my PS were to crap out, I could deal with it.
My '88 4runner does it as well, and its a bit more annoying because it makes the noise for longer.....heh......

Mine makes all kinds of noises when really cold and I think this is one of them. I figure it's because of things shrinking/expanding with the cold or thicker fluids so if it goes away when it warms up a little I attribute it to that and try ignore it.

I would it'd be a pump bearing. Warm fluid would:

1) Lubricate
2) Equal out temperature, thus "warm up" the bearing, and cause parts to loosen up (no more sound).

I was gonna suggest the air pump too (if equipped). Bearing locked up on buddy's 82 the other day and the pulley siezed... butthe belt still kept rotating. Guess what kind of sound THAT scenario makes? I thought a neighborhood cat got stuck in the belt...
