Removing sleeve in shock

Removing sleeve in shock

The shocks I ordered for the rear have a metal sleeve in the bottom part. If I can remove the sleeve it will fit right over the rear mount. Is there an easy way to remove this sleeve or will I have to cut/grind it out?

I jost found a bolt of the same diameter and just tapped it through. SHouldn't be too bad.

Or if you can get some needle noses on it, try yanking it that way.

Tried all of the above and its not budging. I tried cutting it out, but I don't have anything that can get in there. This a rancho shock with poly bushings.

the bushing most likely wont fit anyways. i had this problem on my 4Runner. i ended up drilling out the bushings and buying new ones. the guy at the 4x4 shope where i bought my new bushings said that they cheat and burn them out.

off topic, but where can i get an entire set of poly bushing? minus shocks if possible

You can make a little press out of a vice. Put a large socket on one side big enough for the sleeve to go into, on the other side put a socket small enough that the sleeve won't go into it. Then start cranking the vice shut until the sleeve is pushed out. Watch out or you may end up with the small socket stuck in the bushing.

Probably depends on the shocks, but for Ranchos, you can buy a poly bushing kit at most places that sell the shocks:

I just went through this with my 5009s. I ended up threading a hacksaw blade into the sleeve and cutting it out.

Did it come out pretty easy once cut? Did you cut it on both sides or just one?

iv already got the poly bushings that came with the OME shocks... i wanted to do the other bushings cuz after getting up close with them today i was not happy

You'll notice the sleeve is just a rolled pin so it already has 1 slice in it. Use the hacksaw to cut another slice in it about 90 degrees apart and you should be able to get that small chunk out of it. Then bend up the rest of it and pull it out. But, no, you've still got to wrestle it out with a vise grip.

I use a pitman puller and a socket extension to get them out, worked like a charm. Got them both out in a few minutes, almost done with the rear, then to the front.

I got some free Rancho F150 takeoffs from my work, and the only way I got them out was to destroy the bushing. Other shocks have sleeves that are pretty easy to remove, but not Ranchos!!
