When does a 22r carb engine red-line?

What is the first point of red-lining for the RPM's on a 22r carburated engine?

i'd say on a stock engine your power starts to drop at around 5000RPM.

when i get my new engine built with a crawler cam, probably even lower.

damn, i usually shift at 3,000 RPM because i thought it seemed like the R's were up and today i went to like 3500 to test, i would of never thought i could go even more, what do u think is normal like shifting up hills or something....4,000??

5750 redline.
I shift my 3.slow from anywhere between 3000-5000, different motor tho.
i wouldn't go above 4000 unless it's freshly rebuilt...

My 22re was bone stock except a K&N drop-in. I revved it to 4000 all the time when pulling up the dunes or going for max speed for passing etc. (I used to actually watch the tack and keep it at 4000, no more no less...) I felt there was no more power to be had above that - it just didn't "pull" above 4 grand anyway. But 5750 is the redline and was therefore "safe" when new. On an older motor I wouldn't do it. No reason to do that anyhow though. But you always shifted at 3 grand you've never felt how capable that little engine really is!

If you didn't have a tach, a good rule of thumb for how high to rev is either when the engine sounds no longer sound good but rather get kind of "ratty" sounding - NOT valve float - if you rev it that high you will hurt something! It just doesn't sound sweet above a certain speed so don't rev it up there. The other way is when it doesn't willingly keep revving and pulling any higher. No need to rev any higher if the power has quit building, now is there? This point will nearly always be well below the actual redline, except of fast revving car motors (or motorcycle motors.) On an MR2 or a Kawasaki, for instance, it feels SWEET right up to redline. Different animal.
