for my 5VZ-FE (3.4L), i use a filter for a 1995 3.0L Taurus. yes, for a FORD.

i personally like the NAPA GOLD filters. good stuff, easily found, and affordable.

this one has ~70% more filter media than the standard OEM toyota filter!

now check this out! the Toyota 3.0L V6 takes the same filter as the 3.4L. that means that you can also use the ford filter - if it will fit in the location - i'm not sure about that one though.

however, you still need to check to see if it will physically fit into the spot for the filter.

another interesting fact is that the V8 engine in my UZJ-100 Land Cruiser (V8) takes the same filter as the 4Runner, which is a prime candidate for the larger Ford filter since it also takes quite a bit more oil. the more media, the better...

the idea is to look at your filter side-by-side with other filters of the same diameter. find on that has the same gasket diameter and same thread diameter/pitch, but with more filter media (overall longer).

The Purolator L30042 and PL30042 have the same dimensions. I believe they cross-reference to a 3.0L Mazda engine.

For those who insist, the Mobil1 M1-205 is also an oversized filter that will fit the 5VZ.

actually, i found the filter by removing about 10 or so from their boxes at wal-mart one evening about a year or so ago. i took the equivalent filter for the 5VZ-FE, then started searching for one in a similar diameter, but longer. then i honed in on the ones that had a similar thread/gasket diameter, then matched pitch. it came down to the one that fit the Ford 3.0 V6.

Very shortly after posting this thread, I switched to Wix 51516 oil filters for the very reasons mentioned above (although the numbers I provided then were purely estimates).

Wix manufactures the Napa Golds...

EDIT: I'm running the Wix 51516 on my wife's 3.3L '06 Sienna too.

for a toyota filter, the by-pass pressure is higher. since there is less filter media, then it can more easily become clogged. however, at 20-psid, you're loosing quite a bit of flowrate once you trigger the bypass valve. w/ the other filter, the valve will open with less pressure differential, but the chances of that happening are diminished since you have more filter media that has to get clogged before it creates enough backpressure to trigger the by-pass valve. with 40% more media, then it would be the equivalent of having a ~11.2 psid by pass on a toyota filter.

to me, the slighty lower number is better - as stated above, unfiltered oil is better than no oil at all. considering how toyota engines will sludge with old oil, then the lower bypass trigger is better in my opinion.

Good find. I've been meaning to find a cross reference for my 2.7L engine. The filter on this motor is really small. I usually go 4000 miles between changes and sometimes if I'm pressed for time I will change only the oil and not the filter. I drive 2000 miles a month. I've cut lots of filters open and never seen any visable junk in the filter. However, when I went 8000 miles on one filter the oil came out pretty dirty, so I won't do that again.

This is not uncommon to find filters from other cars that work on your car. I found out that for my 71 Riviera I can get a larger oil filter if I ask for a filter for a 1970 Jeep with the 225 Odd-fire V6. A completely different car, but it also has a Buick engine.

Never buy Fram filters, their drain back springs are really weak and the filter ends are cardboard.

Hmmm... I never knew that the oil filter threads where US threads. Someone else posted this in another thread. Also I would like to mention that Napa Gold and Wix filters are made here in the US, the Napa Select are made in Mexico.

My 84 22R always used the "Classic Ford" spin on..

The "Classic Ford" is the spin-on that started spin-ons (1957).. the PH-1, FL-1, PER-1.. many other filters use the "Classic Ford" mounting.. including Toyota.. I think they will interchange..

I would use the one of these.... they are a 25K mile filter and this chart shows their efficancy vs other filters....

The only issue with going to differnt filters is the placment of the bypass valve... you could use an OEM EaO and have better filtration than an oversized Napa...

Yes.. bigger is not always better... but a better big one can be best...

Will the AeO26 fit? Space wise, it will screw on...

I have AeO26's for a by-pass set up... I'll try & snap a pic of a stock filter nect to it...

I feel lame, I had my oil change done today, its cold out, and snowing, and I don't ever feel like doing it in an apartment lot... Mobil 1 again, last was same 3000 miles ago.. looked pretty dirty, either way though, i don't even know what kind of filter is on it
