Oops, maybe that was just a regional thing. Oh well be sure to read the fine print, sale hours may vary, offer void in some states.

Pardon my dumb on this one, but can you just pull the dipstick to see how dirty the oil is?

I know the place I'm having my inpsection done (i bought the trukc out of state, where they don't do inspections) is probably going to give me a big "WTF" look when I hand them a filter that's bigger than the old one, but they're a very good local shop. I trust them a lot further than I can throw them.

In fact, I called to schedule the appt and asked if they'd also lube the zerks and shafts, JR's response was "we do that anyway!". This is why I like them... they think of stuff before I do.

Full mobile 1 synthetic + napagold FIL1516, Oil is in, zerks are lubed...

I fired it up and immediately noticed that there was less engine noise, and it just felt smoother. I guess thats the M1. Time will tell with the filter.

Yeah I just happen to have a 95 3.0 Taurus. It's nice to be able to buy the same filter for both.

I tried the longer taurus filter yesterday and it wouldn't fit. There is an end of a bolt that sticks out and keeps the filter from lining up. The bolt looks to be on a mount for the diff. Oh well.

Try the OEM filter for the 4.0 or 4.7, a hair larger but not much.... but it must be OEM as all aftermarket filters, that I have seen, are the same size as the 3.4 filter.

Sorry if I come off too pessimestic, but how much better are these bigger filters? As a previous poster stated, the Toyota OEM filters do the job fine. I'm just wondering what the benefits are from using these Ford filters. I can see how the Amsoil filter relocation kit will come in handy, but the Ford/NAPA filters, I don't see a reasoning for. Ok, so it's got 70% more filtering media, but does that mean 70% better filtering? If your filter starts to get clogged up, maybe that'll be a plus, but rarely do any of us enthusiasts go longer than is recommended for oil changes.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as our engines keep on truckin', I'll use OEM products.

Bigger filter of same build design will filter better... Now if you use a really good OEM size and a crappy ford size then no you probably wont see any gains...

I will have some visual data from OEM filter to Amsoil/Wix setup, about 200 miles to go..

I do understand that bigger filters will filter better, but I'm thinking that there is a point where it won't matter how much bigger you go. At what point does the filtering efficiency plateau? I think the R&D department at Toyota would've looked into this when designing their oil filters (I hope, at least).

Anyway, I'm very interested to find out what your test results are.

Yeah mine fit too, even with a sandwich cooler adapter making it about 1 inch longer.

Napa oil filter sale is today, Thursday 3/12/09. At least in my area of the country, this is their semi-annual 40% off sale for oil filters. It is one day only, twice a year.

Not only is the Taurus larger but its 31microns absolute vs the 37microns absolute for the OE Wix filter..

The Amsoil would still be a better filter at 15 microns absolute.

Ok I know this is a little off target but I purchased a 97 runner with 3.4 and it has 224k on it. The previous owner took good care of it so it doesn't leak. What type of oil should I use? I run fully synthetic in my Speed3 but I've had that since new. Should I go with a high mileage oil, use a sythetic blend, go fully synthetic? I think they just been using dino oil 5-30 castrol. Will the Napa Gold 1516 fit my rig? Does anyone know if Napa is having there sale today in the Pac NW?

Cheers,

Rich

Bummer, did they say when it is? The 1516 should fit yours fine, its just longer. Look at the area around your filter and see if a longer filter would hit anything. Keep in mind the engine does move some too.
