89 4x tranny on a 86 4x

As the title says....will it work? Both 5spd.

I've been trying to find a tranny for my DD, but I ether cant find one or cant afford one as I'm a student at SDSU....

I found a guy 20 miles from my house that has a tranny and t-case from an 84 and a 89...says the 89's in better shape but if it wont work I'll go with the 84...

how much work is invovled?

Thank you!

Blair

As long as both are the same engine, yep, no worries.
5 speeds are easy to drop. (careful not to drop it on yourself!)
hint: borrow all the socket extensions you can find - you'll need them to get the upper bolts on the bellhousing...

Thank You!

I've tried doing research to no alas...

I'm confused about this shifter issue...On some both go to an adapter...on others one to the tranny and one to the transfer...Some wrecking yard guy was talking bout this and I stopped listening....do I need to be carful bout this or was he crazy

thanks again!

You need to make sure the shifter comes out the same place as the one you have. We had a 85 22r parts truck, and it was different than the 85 22RE we needed a trans for.

Thats what I'm tryin to figure out...

Supposidly some have a connector or somthin that they both come out of, and some, one come out the tranny, the other the transfer...

Will it matter if I get the tranny and transfer and they are different...what mods are needed...

thanks again

As I said "as long as both engines are the same" you should be fine.
Why go through the expense and trouble to change out the trans and not put the right one in there?
Here's a resource that might help: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/
