I've noticed that since I've gotten my Revos (actually I've had them for quite a while...) there are many, many paint chips where rocks have been tossed out of the tire treads. I've read that these tires tend to do this, and I'm wondering what can be done to protect the paint.

Add mud flaps or wider aftermarket fender flares.

i've got the same issue with my BFG AT's. ...they are ruining the paint job. i guess i need to put the front mud flaps back on.

i remember some of the older toyota trucks used to have a clear film on the body right in front of the rear tires ....does anyone know if you can get something like that from an aftermarket source?

When I ran BFG AT I notice that same thing on my Xterra so I put the mud flaps back on and just removed them for offroading.
It comes down to tread pattern, I know, no kidding. My Hydroedge tires on my Corolla pick up more rocks than I like also.

Yeah you can buy a film that you place on your hood, fenders, or wherever. I can't remember what the exact name is or where to get it but I believe that 3M makes a product like it. It's similar to the clear window tinting.

I don't think I even have stock flares - I just have a black and silver strip running along the top of the wheel well. I do have stock mudflaps though. I drive an 01 Runner with a 3.5 inch OME lift.

The product is called Clear Shield, most Toyota dealers will put it on for you but its not cheap...I guess you could probably buy a roll of it somewhere and put it on yourself but you would need to get the special adhesive that it requires. My brother got it on his Camry and its pretty sweet! I think it comes in 1/16" or 1/8".

I get the same kinda dings and chips you're getting and I've got the stock fender flares and mudflaps on mine still...I'm worried about when I get my BFG A/T's...I'm hoping that I'll be in my place by them so I won't have to drive on a dirt road everyday.

Revo's throw rocks more than my bfg mt, and more than my old bfg at's did. I'm not quite sure why they are so infamous about launching rocks, but it's a minor tradeoff for the performance those revo's have on snow and rain. They are the best on-road/snow rain tire I've ever used.
let'm throw some rocks........it lets you know the tires are doing their job.

Yep, the tighter the tread pattern, the more rocks get thrown up. Rocks get stuck in between the tread blocks and get picked up by the tire. Small voids = small rocks, large voids = large rocks, but there generally millions of small rocks on gravel roads and not many big ones. I've done some long desert road trips, both with a set of Swampers and with some BFG ATs. I recall hearing one rock "ping" over like 50 miles with the Swampers. The ATs on the other hand were constant with rocks flying up. I had all the paint on the bottom and forward facing surfaces of my sliders sandblasted to bare steel in about 40 miles of desert road.

You can get clear plastic paint protector strips or add flares and mudflaps. Many states have regulations requiring full tire coverage and if you are getting rocks flying up and hitting the sides of your truck, you may have tires sticking out past the fenders.

i don't think georgia has such a law. ....however, the 32's i'm running don't really stick out that far. ..it's the fact that i don't have front mud flaps. i guess the previous owner took them off because they were rubbing on the 32's. i may try to hunt down a spare set from someone round here that doesn't use them.

Running boards will cure most of your problems. Another reason why I'm a holdout and still have mine on.
