85 22re ----> 99 3.4
Let me start by saying that I have read through many of the 3.4 swap threads. Sadly most of them are 3.0 to 3.4, that in mind I believe most of my current questions are directly related to my situation.
I was lucky to find a local guy that was getting rid of a project truck. He was in the process of installing a 99 3.4 with auto and gear driven t-case into his 87 4runner. I picked up everything he had for a great price.
I have the entire engine, Chilkat motor mounts
Boxes of wiring, the automatic transmission is already fitted with a Inchworm adapter and 23 spline gear driven t-case.
All of the above will be going into my 85 4runner

I want to retain my factory instrument cluster and steering column then splice the needed wires into the 99 wiring harness. In short the only new wiring I am looking to use is directly related to the engine.
Current questions.....
-Can I start cutting out circuits that will not be used such as ABS, airbag and A/C
-Will the new automatic transmission have an issue with running a gear driven t-case and the cable drive speedo?
Any and all thoughts/ advise would be greatly appreciated.

No problems here, just match function for function.

You can, but why? Just leave the wiring harness intact. Only hook up the necessary swap wires. If you are making a conversion harness, you can leave out unnecessary wires from the conversion harness to simplify it a little. Unless you are very comfortable, you'll probably end up missing something and wish you hadn't "cut out" those wires/circuits.

Mine doesn't. The ECU get it's signal from the speed sensor in the combo meter. It converts your mechanical driven speedo to an electrical signal used by the ECU. You'll find that signal wire in the recipient body harness.
I think you'll find everything you need here in the forums. First and foremost you will HAVE to get the Toyota EWDs for both vehicles, if you don't have them already.

Thanks for the response.
I have a complete FSM for me 85 and found the needed wiring pages. I also have the wiring sheets for the 99 so I should be good there. However I have little experience looking them over, going to take a little time to get everything figured out.
Now I was looking at my 3.4 today and I saw a cable coming off of the TPS going to the transmission, is that for the cruise control?

TPS= throttle position sensor and does not have a cable. You are likely looking at the trans kickdown cable. I would have hoped that buying somebody's else project you would have been a bit more familiar with it, but you can learn! dntsdad has an excellent "sticky" article "3.4 swap 101" that goes into some detail about reading and EWD that helped me learn, I knew nothing of EWDs beforehand. It's all here, you just gotta read read read.

I would suggest using marlins speed sensor adapter. It will screw on the transfer case where the speedo cable goes and converts it to an electrical signal. Mine works perfect. Of course with marlin, it probably out of stock.

I have cleaned up the engine bay some and pulled the 22re, still need to pull my current transmission and t-cases.
I will be getting in touch with the local Ref soon but I am wondering a few things.... Can I still run my stock 4cyl fuel tank? Or do I need to get a stock 6cyl tacoma tank? Also there is a 96 or 97 v6 4runner in the shop here that I can use in helping me make sure all my new parts end up in there proper place. Does anyone know if any major changes were made between the 96 and 99 3.4 set ups?

Made alot of progress over the past few months. Built my own frame side motor mounts to have the engine sit below the hood. Installed all of the tacoma wiring, column and cluster. I had issues getting the engine to run. Turned out that the guy I bought the engine from had installed the new timing belt 7 teeth off. Fixed that then had to replace the thermostat. Got it running and now I am finishing the fuel filler neck for the 3.4 4runner fuel tank I am using.
