IPF wiring harness & Hella 500 lights

Are these compatible??? I ordered my hella 500 lights off of ebay and the guy sent me an IPF wiring kit instead of the Hella. It doesn't seem to be exactly the same, and i can't mix and match the Hella and IPF diagram to make any sense of it. Has anyone else done this?

I imagine that they can't be too different. The lights have a power and a ground wire and the harness should have wires, a relay and a switch. run the wire off the lights to a good ground, run the power wire to the output terminal on the relay (the ipf instructions should tell you which) and wire up the relay and switch according to instructions (or to preference).

Was there anything in particular that made you think they were incompatible?

ok i have a small problem, i got the toyota OEM fog light switch. my relay has 1 extra wire. I notcied on the hella instructions, there is a ground from the switch, but as you can see on this IPF instruction (from what i can tell) there is no ground on their switch wiring, only from the relay. So, I'm kind of stumped, I'm not too sure what the wiring is supposed to be. Help!

i think the oem switch has to be ground too? since theres a light on the oem one and none on the pod shaped IPF one. search 'fog+light+swich' and itll tell you how to hook up your oem switch. cant remember the how to on it when i was surfing for that info..

btw whats the P/N of your oem switch? i thought the oem fog switches were on the signal stalk? or are you running an older dash mounted switch?

Sonny,

I got the parts dept at Regency Toyota to order it in for me last week. Part Number is C0550-96517.

So i can just cap off the extra wire coming from the relay that was going to the IPF switch?

So does your switch have 3 terminals on the back? You should have have 1 term wired to 12V power, one to the relay, and the other should be ground the ground wire. IIRC, for the old Toyota switch, the top is the ground, middle 12V power, and the bottom to the accessory.

yeah taht's the one, i'm just not sure about the relay. The relay's taht i'm seeing on all the diagrams (with the hella wiring harness) have a line to the battery, ground, ONE line to the switch, and a dual line to the lights. The difference with the IPF relay is that there are TWO lines to the switch. I'm going to get some 10 gauge and an inline fuse and i'll go from there tommorow.

the wireing harness should work just fine. i always make my own wiring harnesses. heres a real quick viso diagram of how i wire my lights.

the numbers on the relay might not be in that order, but the numbers will be the same.

I think thats right... 87 and 30 might be back wards.... but i am 99% sure that image is right.

Gotcha - so the second wire from relay to switch is probably a grounding wire for the switch? As long as your switch is grounded, you should be fine.

Ok well, i wired everything up and checked my grounds with no luck. went out a replaced my IPF relay with another, and magically everything worked. i'm assuming that extra wire was not closing the circuit and then there was no power. Either that, or it was way over my head.

You need to find a wire/empty fuse slot that is ignition-controlled. In the 05+ tacomas, there's an empty fuse location in the cab that is only hot when on/running. I ran my switch wire to that spot, with an inline fuse. Not sure if you have the same thing in a '92.
