what do you need to know?

81-82 blocks had taller deck heights and dual row timing chains, 83-84 had taller deck heights same as 81-82 but had single row timing chains, 85-on engines had a shorter deck height and flat topped pistons with single row chains.

you can also look in the spark plug holes and see which pistons it has.

I believe the valve covers were different between the 81-84 and 85-on, just not sure on the years.

EDIT: to make it more readable:

81-82 taller deck height ...... domed pistons ......................... dual row timing chain

83-84 taller deck height ...... domed pistons same as 81-82 ... sing row timing chain

85-95 short deck height ...... flat top pistons ......................... sing row timing chain

Nooooo, 81-84 had short deck heights with domed pistons and 85-95 had tall deck heights with flat topped pistons. And yes, the valve covers are different between the two

Noooo, the 20 and 22R up to 84 had TALLER deck heights. The 22R was de-decked in 85 and was discontinued (in the US anyway) in 95 when the Tacoma took the Mini's place.

Making the de-decked 22R/E production run from 85 to 95.

lol, sorry guys...

The block deck was de-decked in 85. So you cannot and should not interchange the heads.

85-95... Blocks are all the same (Ex Turbo) Semi-flat topped pistons. Have a slight dish.
79-84 blocks are easily ID'd by the high top pistons.

Here's a RE cover on an early 22R block

I thought that was already cleared up? and that's what my post now reflects above? Maybe when I split the 81-82 and 83-84 styles confused you too? Maybe I will re write that to make it more readable and understandable.

EDIT, dang it did it again, I see what you mean now, need coffee. lol. I will re re edit. hahaha.
