Alright, how the heck do I get my rotors off?

I am so very confused because everything I read while searching says I need the 54mm locknut socket that goes in the hub....that socket is way to big

So what do I do now? Does that 12mm bolt do any thing? I was thinking about using the break bar and taking it out, but I would hate if that was something I'm not supposed to do.

And Im kinda screwed because my rotors are shot so I cant really just throw new pads on there and say screw it. This is an 87 4runner SR5 22re 5 speed. I think it might have had automatic hubs and the PO converted them. please and thanks for any help

Red face

I hate to say this but you need to remove the rest of your hub now!!

This is where you learn of the cone washers these guys all love for some reason!!

Once the hub is off your socket will fit .

Need to take the gold washer out
Then take off the back part of the hub dial assembly
Then take off the brake calipers
Then take the 54 mm socket and take off the lock nuts and washers
slide the entire hub off, catching the bearings
Take the six bolts off the rotor to hub flange
Put new rotor on.
Put in new bearings
put on caliper and new pads
Put back on lock washers
Put back on hub
Screw the gold bolt back on
Put on hub dial
Done!

Do yourself a favor and read the FSM and some other online write ups before going any further.

You'll need a thin wall socket as well. Many sockets are too thick on the sides and won't fit inside the hub:

That 12mm bolt has a torque spec of 25 ft/lbs so be careful with it...just throwing that out there since you mentioned putting a breaker bar on it. And yes, I broke one of mine off.

after doing a couple face palms i went to the fsm that I forgot I owned. In the brake section they dont go into removing the rotors, thats in the front axle and suspension section.

for the cone washers, I put a deep 14mm socket over the stud and gave a couple taps and they came out nicely
