Why is my xfer case shifter off

Hey guys just bought an 86 xtra cab 4x4. I was told it had an auto and was swapped over to a 5spd from another 86. Now this is my 5th toyota 4x4 and all of the others the 4wd shifter sits straight up and a little towards the driver. Mine faces the passenger side dash. When i put it in reverse it hits the small shifter. Any ideas?

Might just be because you have a different tcase, were any of your other Toyotas the same tcase? Also if it has a body lift someone might have done a little ghetto fabrication on the shifter

I was wondering if the transfer case could be different from what came in the truck. It just doesn't look like it should be leaned over towards the glove box. Are there different transfer case options in those years. OH yea no bodylift on the truck

I have a top shift tcase, and it points over towards the glovebox. It does get whacked by the shifter occasionally.

X2 here. Both my 86 pickup and the 89 4runner do this.

Maybe try pulling the shifter and then turn it 180 degrees and stab is back in and see if that is any better. Otherwise, you can bend it to a more upright orientation. Marlin does this with a length of pipe that drops over the shifter, just long enough to fit in the cab and then gently bends it into the desired position.

just be sure to pull it like 4crawler suggested, do not attempt to bend it when it is in the TC.

I have had this problem in my old 87 22r

the problem was the shifter seat and socket was worn
