22re slight miss at steady engine speed
Ok so my 86 4runner, 22re, 5spd has a slight miss randomly at steady throttle positions. It is enough of a miss to not only hear but also see when watching the motor. I can not tell if it is doing it under load ie when I am driving.
It is a newish 3-5k miles performance 22re
Valves are perfectly adjusted
AFM tests fine
new stock plugs gaped correctly
new wires
new cap
new rotor
new fuel filter
what else could it be? Dirty injectors? Bad O2 sensor (I have no cat)? TPS?

Hm, all 3 22res I have owned ('88,'93 and now '95) have had a little stumble at a constant RPM, only noticeable not under load, mainly at idle ( so many other vibrations when driving and such). I just figured thats how they roll and its funny because all three have had the EXACT same vibration at the EXACT time, i.e. I could/can feel the 'miss' in the gear shifter every 3 seconds and it is/was the same amount of movement in all three. I have ran seafoam through all of them, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc and its still there...so I basically just don't worry

Mine has a ever so subtle "lope" to it at idle...or so I only notice it at idle.
I've just got to the point that I ignore it...never have had a problem.

my 93 does not do this..........
but then again that is probally the best running 22re I have ever seen
back to the 86
it seems too really be worst at around 2000 rpm, idle it's barely there if at all but at 2000 rpm or so it's definately noticeable.

I just went threw this with my rebuilt 22RE. I spent two weeks diagnosing everything, and it came down to my TIMING! I replaced the O2 sensor (although, it was bad, but wasn't the problem), checked the AFM, checked for exhaust leaks, etc, and couldn't come up with anything. I tell you, it was a pain in the ass!
You got a timing light? Hold the engine at a steady speed to where it starts popping and missing like you discribe. Loosen the distributor and turn it either which way and see it the popping stops. If it does, you know the timing is wrong. Trust me, it's really easy to check, I may be sounding really stupid, but just look at it, it stumped me for DAYS! (literally), LOL.

Mine does it too. Only at about 1000-2000rpm sitting in the driveway. And timing would explain that. Im getting a new timing chain guide, tensioner, chain, etc. As far as i can tell my 206k yota has never had anything done with the timing. And it just recently started some timing chain slap.
I will let you know if that fixes it.

I'm going through the same thing! I've searched the web through and through and had little or no success. Things that have improved it have been valve lash adjustment and spark plug gap. I'm running a rv 268 cam on a new motor with stiffer springs bigger valves 8.5mm plug wires k&n intake header and catback exhaust. Adjusted the valves to .009 intake and .013 exhaust that helped a bit. then gapped the plugs to .035. the miss is still there but really hard to notice. Not saying these settings are perfect but they helped me after a bit of trial and error. good luck!

Set valves at .008 and .012, set spark gap at factory of .031", and re-check your timing.

I called engnbldr to find the correct valve lash for my 268 cam and set them to .007 intake and .009 exhaust. that helped even more! Then went to the parts store and replaced the pvc valve. that helped a little more as well. If the engine is stock then stick with what erik said he's on point with the settings stock, make sure you set them on a motor that has been warmed up first. I've heard that looking at the IAC valve " idle air control valve" is another problem people have had, but have yet to investigate. Also check and clean your AFM that could be another problem. The valve lash settings are from engnbldr and the plug gap is still the same at .035 due to the 8.5mm plug wires. I still have a slite miss but way less noticeable now. Hope somebody chimes in and gives us an answer. I'm stumped but happy to make progress if only a little.
