22re rebuild
Well I have done it again. Just pulled the blown engine from the 4runner. Luck may have it. The engine I bought for $150 buck is completely stock and getting bored 20 over crank is being ground and line bored due to a spun bearing. Hope to get my hands on it tomorrow. But some progress on pullin the engine. So I got to start somewhere. I did find a wiring harness from an 1987 4runner hope that works out as well. I also bought a new head from engine builder with 261 cam and full rebuild kit ,oil pump and water pump. So hopefully I will get it all back together in next few weeks. I may also paint the engine bay if I can get the time. Looks kinda bad compared to the rest of the runner. So that's bout it. Any suggestion would be great Thanks in advance

Well started cleaning the engine bay. It was pretty nasty to say the least. Got most of it do before the fam got home. You can see the difference in the hood. Nothing like a lil elbow grease.
So I'm on my way. Also ordered new headers from LCE and the head light conversion kit. So I will let u know how those go. Slowly but surely on my way.

Great job on getting it cleaned up and starting on our rebuild. I seen you mentioned that you got an 87 harness. Which one did you get and is yours an 87 as well? Toyota changed at least something on each year of truck. I looked at your statistics and didnt see the year of your runner. Looks great!!

I haven't got as far as checking all the connection yet. But just off hand it looks to be the same. My 4runner is 86. But my harness has been cut to piece by the PO. So we will see when I get the engine rebuilt and I'll update as I go

An 86 has an extra temp sensor that the 87 doesnt have. An 85 might be closer to interchanging. If it is the injector harness, I would just swap it out. Not to bad of a job to do. Also I replace my injector connectors from http://www.connectorsfast.com/

Well. Started putting the engine back together got the crank back in and 3 of the 4 piston til I broke one of the piston rings. Engine builder was nice enough to send me the no 2 ring for free. So waiting on it to finish up the build. As far as the wiring harness goes Mine is completely butcher none of the clip r intact and most of the wiring is broke or just missing the connection all together. Once I get the engine assembled I'm planning on laying both of them out and seeing what all matches and doesn't. But for now it what I have and will go from there.

Well thanks to engine builder got the new ring in. Got the final piston in and went to town today on the engine assembling everything. Just have to pull the oil pan off the old engine and clean it up and paint it. And put it on and the engine should be ready to go back in the truck. As far as the wiring looks to be one extra wire so not sure what it does but everything seems to match up so far.

Got the engine in the truck today. The 1987 wiring harness matched up to everything perfectly. Had two plugs left over which were vsv plugs but other than that run good. Went thru the break in procedure did well had some minor leaks hoping torquing the head bolts down fixed that. Trailering it to a friend shop to finish the rest of the work. My timing light is broke so that's as far as I got today

Well tried to post some photos of the engine in but my phone is being a pain right now. Will try to keep y'all updated on the build. As of right now the 1987 engine harness into an 1986 4runner worked out great. Had to plugs left over both r for the vsv. Everything else matched up perfect. But I am having some trouble with my oil pressure gauge put a new one in nothing. I was having trouble before the new engine. If anyone has some tips that would be great. And yes the engine is getting great oil pressure. How do I know. Well I forgot to tighten the valve cover on first start up so I sprayed oil everywhere. Also anyone had any trouble with their lights. Reg works fine click to high beam. Nothing lights completely go out. Anyways that's it for the day.

Need some help. Having issues with the lights. I have looked around but can't really find anything. So truck runs great until I put a load on it. Start to sputter and back fire. Check the alternator giving a good charge not sure what else to check. Battery is new and is not having issues. Thinking it might be the wiring but not sure. Just seeing if anyone else has had the problem.
Thanks

engine timing or throttle position sensor. All so check all of your grounds, the computer has a ground that attaches to the intake manifold I believe.

Checked all the ground. All of 4 of them have good connection. So lil update. Engine charge lite is on but the alternator is giving a good charge. May be the wiring that is bad. But will have to wait til I have a few days off to dig thru it. Other than that I am clue less. Not sure may still be the alternator. Will start with the wiring and go from there. Anyone have any clues on what to look for or how to test to see if the wiring is bad. Beside the obvious corrosion and breakage. I know since the wires r by the exhaust it stay hot and they may be brittle and may not conduct as well. Anyway to confirm this by testing??
Thanks

Well redid two of the 4 grounds and replace the alternator. Everything seem to be working correctly. Except my high beams. Low beams work fine but when I go to switch over to high complete darkness. Well checked the wiring at the plug to the light no power when on high beam so I'm guessing it's something in the switch. Guess that will have to wait for another off day. The crappie r biting here so gonna take advantage of that while that last.
If u have any ideas on the high beam situation let me know
Thanks

No problem. Rent a Steering Wheel Puller from your local parts store for free. Dont try and bang the steering shaft or it will bulge and you wont get the wheel back on. I go to the parts store, loosen the 19mm? ( I think it is the size) nut rent the puller and pull the wheel loose in the parking lot and then put the nut on tight enough that it wont let the wheel come up and then go home and fix the contacts. For me is about a 30 minute fix.

Thanks again Terrys87. Pulled it all apart to and filed down the points. Works like a charm. Have to fix the back window switch. Gonna pull it apart and see what's goin on with it now
