Well after finally figuring out my bad vibration at 60 mph or so, I found my right front wheel clunks back and forth when i shake the tire side to side.Im pretty sure its the wheel bearings loose and not the knuckles bearing because the left and right movement is fine. So how do u go about tightening my bearings down? I read the axle rebuild on 4x4wire or whatever and i couldnt really figure out how to do it without rebuilding the whole axle liek they did. would it require removing a bunch of stuff or just the hub? i plant to rebuild both sides completely but for now i was hopin to just take off the hub or whatever and tighten up the bearings so its drivable.

Should i replace the seals on the hubs or just reuse em till im ready to rebuild my front axle. I figured out why they might be loose(hopefully) and not worn because the original onwer recorded that the rh wheel bearings were done less then 100k ago and the left side is fine and shows no record or being replaced. i hope i didnt damage the bearings/races too much by driving with em loose.

If it has been clunking you'd should replace those bearings and consider replacing the bearings on BOTH sides at the same time for good measure...not that expensive. I got them on my website. Not hard to do either.

i have no money at all and i need a vehicle to drive. I dont see how bearings with 100k could be worn and bearings with 275k arent? it doesnt clunt when i drive, I can just pull on top of the the tire and make it clunk a little.

that is what im going to try first. i just wanted to know if i HAVE to replace the hub seals when i take off the hub? Do auto part stores carry the seal i need if i have to? who carries a 54mm socket?

Not unless the seals are damaged. I got my 54mm socket at Napa. They probably could get ya some seals too.

Have to replace the seal, probably not. Not sure if parts stores would have the seal, I know you can get them separately from Toyota. 54mm (or 2-1/8" thin wall) socket from most any of the Toyota parts places or a tool store. Might see if you can get one at an auto parts place. Some will loan you the tool for a deposit which is refunded upon return of the tool.

I just finished a brake overhaul. I was (am) a complete rookie, so it took me about two weeks gathering parts, making mistakes, but was sucessful following 4crawlers advice and instructions. NAPA sold me some seals that I destroyed very quickly trying to install. I went to the dealer and got the toyota seals. Much better, heavier. I would stay away from the NAPA seals.

My plan was to pull the seals, pack the bearings, and reuse the seals, but I destroyed the seals getting them out. In the long run I learned alot, but it cost me more in seals.

alright, thanks for the advice. im tearing it open tommarow after it stops raining. hopefully it shouldnt take more then 2 hours or so. i figure i will prob have to replace the races since the bearings are loose. if there worn out its like 30 bucks at car quest for 2 bearings and 2 races and the seal on the back of the hub and its all in stock(will have to redo it again when i replace everything but that some other day). im really hoping i get it back together and it fixes the random brake pull and jake brake that my truck seems to have(i can come off the freeway and almost not touch the brakes untill i hit like 30 mph.

alright i got it torn down and the wheel bearings nut and lock nut were liek finger tight . so for nwo im going to tighten back up the bearings because it doesnt look too bad and make a new hub gasket
