how to rebuild a 22re
Has anyone ever done a thread or write up on how to rebuild a 22re,
I would love to attempt this but have only looked at a haynes manual.

do a little searching, any toyota board should have at least 1 good writeup on rebuilding these engines.
i've rebuilt an early 22R, and a late 22R-E. both are very straightforward, take your time and it shouldn't be very difficult if you've ever turned a wrench before. a digital camera can help a great deal if you're not familiar with toyotas.
also, bag and label your bolts, as they are japanese metric and are hard to find outside of a toyota. most hardware stores sell european style bolts, which have larger heads and in some cases won't work in the same application as the ones from toyota(transmission bellhousing bolts are one example)

The motor is pretty straighforward to teardown and rebuild. Find a *good* machine shop that knows what they are doing to advise you on what machine work you need to have done.
For me, as I pull stuff off, I generally zip tie the bolts back into the piece.. IE - front cover, oil pump, etc - that way I know exactly where they go.
I also take photos of each step of the teardown in case I forget, IE:

Getting the EFI off and on correctly is harder than rebuilding the motor in my opinion...
