84 22r starting problem

I joined to get help with this problem. My 84 22r has starting issues.
Ok here it goes. Cold start pump gas pedal twice turn the key and she fires right off. Go out driving let her get up to temp pull in driveway level surface and shut it off. Here is where the problem starts. I go to restart truck and it will not restart it will turn over very slowly like the stater is straining and then nothing but quiet. Let it sit and cool off 20 to 30 minutes pump it and it starts right up. So far i have tried new battery and new starter and even heat wrapped the starter. The problem still continues.

Problem is probably not related but with these 30+ year old rigs. A good idea any time you have any sort of performance issues is to make sure all your grounds are good. Don't just give them a glance but actually pull them off. Clean them up and put a dab of dielectric grease on them. Now there good for another 25-30 years.

I will say on my wife's ford focus I put another ground from the battery to the engine block the idle smoothed out and the acceleration is smoother. So it need hurts to check your grounds.

Check ALL connections - NOT Just ground

Starter straining sounds like not enough power going to starter.

Could be poor battery connection.
Gotta check ALL connections, not just grounds. Do not under estimate corrosion in interface between battery post and battery connector. Ask me how I know.

Could be solenoid contacts not closing ALL THE WAY...
because of the poor circuit design on the 84-85 first-gen 4Runners: No starter relay.
Even if you have a brand-new starter, IF starter solenoid coil does not get full-voltage because of the unnecessarily long path that current has to flow= high resistance, contacts may not close ALL THE WAY, you lose power across the solenoid contacts. Try this to make sure you are getting full power to starter solenoid coil. IF it consistently cranks properly, add a starter relay that is wired properly.

I know I have serious electric Issues. This truck is a total wiring nightmare. I am thinking about getting a painless wiring kit and starting over.

No need to buy Hot Shot Painless wiring IF you're comfortable with electrical work. Just wire in a general purpose 30-amp automotive relay to work as starter relay. Wire like below.
Just need:
  • 1 30-amp or greater relay,
  • A fee of feet of 12-AWG wire
  • 1/4-inch female spade terminal
  • and wiring supplies.

Once you get cranking system working well, work on cleaning up the wiring. Restore it to stock so other members who are thousands of miles from you could easily help.

Best of luck,
RAD

Actually when I say rewire I'm talking about everything. Pull every but of wire out and start fresh with a complete new wire system. I have several problems all electric related. Guage not working Starting issues taillights and turn signals out. I have found broken cut and spliced wires all over the place.

Oh yeah, exactly the way to go if you have the time. Ours are easy trucks to rewire. Figure out the problem areas and strip the harness of the electrical tape cover, inspect and replace all problem wires.

Well its not the starter and its not electrical. I ran it today got it hot and shut it down. I hardwired and jumped the starter same thing. The starter turns the motor very slowly its straining to turn it tuns over about 1 1/2 revolutions and then the starter wont turn it anymore.

I just had a starter go bad and it would barely turn the engine over with the spark plugs out. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...arters-187240/ Have you had the battery tested?

I think you could have a flaky starter.... there is good advice here, you need to make sure the wiring/connections are good. There was some one who had internal corrosion in the main ground wire that caused a starter problem. Let us know how this turns out. A poor man's remote starter switch... take a 3 foot section of 10 gauge wire, solder a female blade connector to one end and use the other end to "touch" the positive battery post...make sure the truck is NOT in gear when you do this!

Kinda sounds like when an old Chevy is slightly out of time.

Heat can cause problems with electrical stuff: electrical motors, sensors, etc. To be clear you have had the exact same problem with two different starters? Another thing you could try is jumping the battery when it is hot, see if that makes any difference. One time I jump started a riding mower using two vehicles, just be careful because a bad starter could be pulling too much current. I was reading on a Ford forum, a lot of folks were having starter problems on a particular model of truck...the solution they came up with was to up size the main battery/starter cables.
