Transfer case question

Does anyone's transfer case make noise. It kind of sound like chain on a sprocket. The faster I go the faster it gets. It will do it when I just lock the hubs and don't put it in 4wd and when I do put it in 4wd. Thanks.

There are no chains in your transfer case only gears (unless it is non stock). Check your transfer case gear oil level and / or change it. Use a high quality gear oil and maybe an additive such as B&G. If the gear oil has not been changed for a long time or water got into the case this can cause noises. If you do the above and it still makes noise you could have serious transfer case operating problems. You might want to check your transmission and differentials also. I change all of my gear oils every 5 years and I use Mobil 1 gear oil and a additive. I have my original transmission, transfer case and differentials with no noise or problems after 30 years of use.

Ok thanks I just got the truck not to long ago and haven't changed all of the oils I should have. I am sure it has been done in a long time. The PO didn't take to good care of it. I am sure you can tell by the pic.

The t-case on my 80 had a bearing whine either when it was in 4wd or with the hubs engaged or both.
I met an older guy that had bought a truck "exactly" like mine new. He said his made the same noise, he had it fixed and it happened again. He drove it for several years and sold it without "fixing it. He said it's the output bearing on the t-case.
I drove mine for 10 years with that noise until I replaced the t-case with one that was on a 5spd I put in last summer.
I used Mobil 1 in it and changed it after a few years. The oil was dirty at the change but not an excess of metal on the drain plug.
I would change all the oils to good stuff and take a good look at the old oil. Look for water, metal shavings on the drain plug or anything other than what should be in there. You might be lucky like me and learn to live with the noise, or maybe not.

As far as I know, locking the hubs has no effect on anything in the t-case except the front output shaft/bearing, so that would make sense. All power to the rear wheels goes through the t-case, so main body of it is always spinning. When you lock the hubs, you're attaching the front wheels to the front axle shafts. So now the front axle and differential are moving as you move. And I guess the front driveshaft would then be moving. Until you put it in 4wd though, no power is going to the front wheels, and you aren't moving those gears in the t-case that are off to that side.

These t-cases are noisier than later models. But I agree with what's been said. Make sure the fluid is good, and see if there are metal shavings on the drain plug.

I think a few people do. I've heard it's good. I don't run synthetic, just because it's harder to find around here for some reason, so I just go with mineral and change at the suggested intervals. Synthetic would be good, though.

I have ran Royal Purple in my manual trans, it did good from what I could tell. I actually got more power. I although, am a bigger fan of AMSOIL than Royal Purple.
