tranny swap on 1980 4x4 P/U
ok...well i finally got everything buttoned up on my truck...now there is another problem...my truck wont come out of first gear...i can go to any other gear...but it wont come out of first....i can push in the clutch and the output shaft flange on the t-case stops...then when i let off the clutch...its as if its in first gear...and i cant do anything about it...so im bout to just say screw it..and get a 5spd tranny...so..i found a 86 turbo'd 4x4 pickup at the local junkyard...the turbo'd 22re isnt in it...and im not sure if the tranny is either...all i know is its a 5speed..so what im wondering is can the turbo'd 22re tranny bolt up to my 20r...if not tell me what trannies can that way i can be on the lookout for one...i want as close to direct bolt in as possible..and what years that tranny is found in...thanks A LOT!

I believe that is the R151? it should bolt up to the engine but in the later IFS trucks the trannys are longer so the mounts wont line up on the cross member (correct me if Im wrong)

yea i figured it was the R151...and yea i know its longer...can i use my t-case with that R151...or do i need to use the t-case thats mounted to it...and also...how can i tell if its an R151...like visually...how do i know its that and not something else...all i know is that the truck is a TURBO...but the motor was swapped..im not sure about the tranny though...thanks

Not sure how to tell if its an turbo trans just by looking at it - have you checked Marlin's site? Your t-case will not work with a turbo trans (unless you convert to a 23 spline input shaft) because the turbo trans has a 23 spline output. Before you give up on your current trans, pull the side cover and see if you can tell what's going on in there (make sure shift forks are engaging correctly, aren't damaged, etc.) Just don't mix up the bolts on the side cover as they are different lengths.

sorry bout that last post..i didnt see your post...i have pulled the side cover off twice...what im worried about is the side cover that was on my tranny was screwed up (it got busted and had a hole in it) but the rest of my tranny was fine, so i took a side cover off of a different L43 and put it on mine...now when i had my little incident....my truck was left in 4th gear (my incident happened at 55 mph...) and so idk if the shift forks are on there correctly...because my tranny was in 4th gear..and idk what the other L43 was in...would that matter...i dont have the driveshafts in my truck...but when i start it up if i put the truck in neutral..then the flange on the back of the tranny is always spinning...now i can go to different gears...2nd 3rd and 4th...but idk if it will be ok to drive like that...it seems that no matter what...its always in 1st gear...except for when i shift into 2nd 3rd 4th or reverse...whats up with that....

In order to work properly, the side cover should have been in the same gear as the trans when assembled. Hard to say for sure, but I think your truck might still be in 4th gear. You could try taking it apart again, putting the side cover in 4th gear and re-assembling. Turn the shaft on the side cover to the left and push it forward - that should be 4th gear (the shaft movement is opposite of shifter movement). Or you could try moving the gears by hand to the neutral position, putting the side cover in neutral and then re-assembling.

Turbo 151 transmission has a very unique rubber access plug on the bellhousing no others have. Looks like a semi-circle and maybe 3" in diameter. Guessing a little here but I had a 86 truck with turbo and 5 speed and remember that plug.

marlin link has got just about all the descriptions you need, just need to do a little reading
R151:
R151F 1986-1987 22RTE (pickups only) 4.31(1st gear) 25 1/4" long Top (w/ Bucket Seats)
Forward (w/ Bench Seats)
Can be identified by round rubber plug on the bottom of the bellhousing.
If that turbo R151 is still there (doubt it) and in working condition expect to pay a premium since they were only offered a few (maybe 2) years and are about the most sought after toy trannies there is due to low first gear and strength.
You could have fubarred up more than the side plate when your broke your driveshaft...

will the W56 bolt directly up...because if it doesnt have the R151 then it probably has the W56...because its a 22RE thats in it....so if it doesnt have the 151 the it has the W56...so will it bolt up too???

I'm going through this right now. It WILL bolt up to the engine, but you need to either shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front, or find 84-88 rear and 84-85 front to make it work, plus cut into the floor a bit to allow the t-case shifter to come into the cab. Then you'll need to find a way to move the crossmember back a bit, since the whole deal is a bit longer than the L52. Sounds worth it, though, from what I've heard about the L52's.
