gear swap
I know this has been covered probably a million times but I'm searching for the wrong things and I'm having difficulty finding what I want to find.
How hard is it to just swap gears yourself and do it correctly?
I put in my own Aussie Locker, I've been a mechanic for 12 years so I'm no stranger to a wrench, but what do you need to do, or what do I search for?

i need some advise on gear swap(new to forum)
hey sorry if im posting this in the wrong spot, i couldnt fin out how to make a new post lol. im building my truck up on a budget. i have a 87 toyota 4x4 sr5 22re ifs truck. procomp lift with springs all around. i want to put gears in my truck. im currently running 32s with stock gears. i can get my hands on 4:30 gears and have them installed for about 150 an axel. how much will this improve my truck? is it worth the 300? oh and i have a trutrac front locker that will be thrown in as well, i know that will help offroading significantly but my question really is about the difference with the gears. let me know what you think!

I just did front and rear in my '82, swapped from stock to 4.88s and added an Aussie up front and spooled the rear. Honestly, it's not really that bad if you PREPARE and TAKE YOUR TIME. The right tools are a MUST (12ton press, some good 2 jaw long reach pullers, dial indicator w/ magnetic base, dial caliper, torque wrench, and a couple special tools you'll need to fab yourself, etc.)
ZUK's website ( http://www.gearinstalls.com/ ) mentioned above is GREAT...I read just about everything on that site before I started. The front took me 2 full days mostly due to the learning curve, installing the Aussie, running down tools, etc. The rear went a little faster...about a full day start to finish.
It can be done and like you said it's a great way to learn. I say GO FOR IT! Let me know if you have any questions that I can maybe answer. GOOD LUCK!

I have looked online for guide to adjust the contact depth and it seems there is conflicting guides. I read one guide that says you cannot adjust the depth contact. Anyway what are your opinions. I am thinking of trying to add .002 shim to the pinion currently it is at .094

But personally, if your backlash is good now, I would have no reservations about leaving it like it is pictured -that is a good paint pattern to me.

What does your backlash look like now? Your backlash basically determines your tooth depth. If your backlash is within spec then you should leave it alone. If your backlash is too great then you would want to adjust it and with adjusting your backlash your tooth depth will be greater. Tightening the ring gear side adjusting nut and loosening the non-ring gear adjusting nut will decrease backlash and increase tooth depth.

86 pickup differential swap
newby here. Recently acquired an 86 4x4 pickup with 22r and a five speed. I live in the country so the first thing I did was purchased some 16” wheels and 31” tires tor replace the 15s. I’ve read you can swap differentials from a 4 runner with 4.88 gears but I don’t know what years will swap or if the IFS is a difficult swap or will even fit.
