1978 pickup 4 speed to a 5 speed swap?
Hi, I have a 1978 with a 4 speed. Freeway driving sucks when everyone is doing 80. Would like to do 65-70mph to be safe. I have sourced a 5 speed from a 1977 pickup. How much is involved to swap the two? Also, my fuel sender is bad, anybody know where to buy one of these. thanks, Mack

as far as bolting together it's a direct swap. the clutch and its components(fork, throwout bearing, slave etc) may be different, and i'd like to think the driveshaft will slide right in.

not to sure about the swap but as for the sender in my 87 4 runner the sender went bad and napa wanted liek 150 bucks. I went to a salvage yard and go the whole fuel tank, fuel pump, sender, and some other crap on and in the tank i dotn even know what it is for 100 bucks. Then i sold the pump and tank and crap and in the end go my sender for like 50 bucks. Not a bad deal. Salvaged parts is the way to go on stuff liek that.

Thanks, ill give the junkyard a try. Local Toyota is contacting Japan to see if they can get one. As for the tranny I'll have to research. When the truck has a load in it I get a clankedy sound through 1st and 2nd. With nothing in the bed it is fine. Seems like its coming from the underneath. Got to drain the diff to see if thats the problem. Are these trannies strong or do they go out after a couple 100k miles??

When you swap to a L50/52 the Clutch arm needs to be changed... I just found that out the hard way. The Throwout hub may be different as well... I'll let you know on that one.

Well fixed the tranny problem. Was underneath looking around and noticed that the center bearing housing on the drive shaft was held on by barely 1 screw. haaa. RUns perfectly but one day woulf dlike to have a 5 speed. Just painted the truck but can't figure out how to post a pic. mack

My 78 also has a l43 and I have a w50 out of a 77 too, I swapped crossmember and bolted it up but I found out the crossmember has a different location for 4speed, the one on the five speed frame is a few inches further back.

I have a 78 with the 4 sp side shift and I'd like to swap in a w50 from a 79 corona. Anyone know if I can use the coronas crossmember? Speedo cable? The donor cars a junkyard car and for anything I get that I don't use I can only return it for credit. That, and it's rare for me to see anything usable around here so I'd like to jump on it before it gets crushed.
