ordered new 22re, any performance suggestions?
Hi, i bought a 90 4runner about 2 months ago. It has 203,000 miles on it... I cracked the head the other day and just decided to buy a new longblock today instead of replacing the head... I got an orient engine.... my question is, what are some things i can do to get a little more performance out of it..... the motor that was in it just didnt cut it.... 4 hi was almost unusable due to the lack of power. Im looking for fairly inexpensive ideas. thanks in advance. Clay

you can dump a ton into it and its not gonna be a rice burner, ever.... easiest things to do, get a new cam, headers (search for 22RE headers for ideas) and 2.25 exhaust with a high flow cat and do the deckplate mod (you can find that searching that exact term).

You're limited to bolt-ons now that you've purchased the motor.
Header (as mentioned above) is probably the best bang for the buck.
Other cheap options are to remove the mechanical fan (go electric), a mild cam, and slightly advance the timing.

First off, 4hi is pretty much useless on a fresh 22RE. Its more of a high speed 4wd, where anything slow requires 4lo..
As far as mods, I would do a Trueflow airfilter, LCE exhaust, magnaflow 2.25" cat, Flowmaster 2.25" muffler..
Your best bet for a little more hp will be a cam and O/S valves. If you really think it necesscary I would see about just getting a short block.
Nothing is inexpensive, and nothing will make a HUGE difference. Even with a 10% gain in useable power you only talking a 130hp motor.
