Need help with SAS for 88 4Runner.
#1
I have been searching web for a while now and I still couldn't find what I need (good thing I found this forum). I want to do a SAS for my 88 4Runner and I need a detailed description with all the stepson how to do it.
On a local junk yard I found an 85 4Runner 4X4 still with all of the parts on it. I am planning to get it front axle but I am not sure what other parts I MAY need to take off of it to do a SAS.
Any help preferably with pictures will be apreciated. Or punch me in the right direction if someone somewhere did this kind if write up.

www.pirate4x4.com Toyota 4Runner and PickUp read the FAQ at the top of the page
Don't ask this question there or you'll get your head flamed off as this information is READILY available just about EVERYWHERE.
www.trail-gear.com
All Pro Off-Road
Marlin Crawler
SAS 88 4Runner
Do a LOT of reading and homework, then ask questions.
Have fun and good luck.

You won't be able to search over on pirate unless you buy a red star for $20. Well worth it. We do have a SAS write up in the tech section.
What you need from the 85 depends on what direction you want to go.
Lets move this to the fab shop.

I want to have at least 35" tires on it, make my truck more offroadable. Places I usualy go to have fun are muddy. We don't have rocks out here where I live so my truck is not going to see any eXtreme trails.

What I mean when I said about "other parts", I kind of noticed that steering gear box is somewhat different or it just set differently inside the truck. And what about other steering components.

I read a lot on this as i was going to do it.
As i understand it and have been told, the Ifs steering box in your rig is the one you want to keep. The IFS box is stronger than the Sa one. So no worries there.
As for the rest of the steering you will end up going Hi steer. Its like a $200 or so kit you can get form the above mentioned shops.
There are a bunch of write ups here and on Pirate, just pull them all up and off you go, just make sure you have something to drink and get comfortable cause it will be a lot of reading.
Find out how others have done think if the same will hold true for you and go accordingly.
Have fun.

You want the entire front axle hub to hub. you do not need the J arm, but keep the nuts and cone washers from that side if you pull the J arm. If they want to charge you for the calipers, leave them cause you will use your 88 calipers. Junk the 85 rotors and get 1981 Fj40 Rotors or buy a kit it is worth it - comes with rotors. You do not need anything else off the '85 - you will use your IFS steering box. I used All Pro's back in 99 when I put a solid axle under my 89 pickup.
