so i'm at a bit of a cross roads well not realy because i will not be doing a sas to my 87 4runner for about 6 months, as im deployed to iraq at the moment. but my main question is this::


i have been looking at marlin's sas kit and the full lift kit for a pre85. from what i can tell it is in my best interest to buy the full lift kit, right. it would wind up cheaper than buying the sas kit and then the rear lift kit. the only down side that i can see is not getting the vented fj style rotors and the wheel spacers, right? the full lift kit comes with every thing else i would need exept the adapter to mount the 5.0 ho i have sitting at my house but thats a whole diferant thread.

is my resoning logical or am i missing somthing???

 

You'll be better off with the SAS kit. As you mentioned, it includes the FJ rotors which which are a huge upgrade from the stock '79-'85 rotors. You'll want these since you're gonna be swapping in a 20 year old axle and it'll probably have rusty rotors on it.

Along the same line as replacing the 20 year old rotors, you'll want the SAS kit 'cause it comes the the steering knuckle rebuild kit. A 20 year old axle is gonna be leaky, greasy, and oily, so rebuilding it before you put it in is the way to go.

Lastly, the SAS kit come with the frame tubes that you'll need to hang the shackles from for your front springs. The '85 and older kit doesn't have these 'cause those trucks already have the tubes through the frame.

 

well i figured that some one that has all ready did a sas would have better insite on the situation.

what if i i got the pre 85 lift kit and bought the rotors and the frame tubes seperatly and it was cheaper? would it be a better idea then???

Yep, but you'll still want to get the kit to rebuild the steering knuckle and replace the wheel bearings, unless you get an axle that has been really well maintained.

 

I plan on rebuilding the axle regardless of the type of kit i get.

They flex well. This is the truck I mentioned that we put it on. These really aren't broken in yet, this is just driveway flex. The fronts flex well immediately, but in the rear of a pick up with no weight, the rears need to break in a bit more to get their best flex IMO.
