1988 4runner engine rebuild, 3.0 V6

hey my engine has about 200,000 miles on it now, and im thinking about rebuilding. alot of you are going to ask why rebuild a 3.0? because i simply cant aford a new engine... id love to swap in a 22re or something like that from LCE Engineering. but what exactly does an engine rebuild include? id like to keep the price as low as possible becuase there are other things that need to be replaced as well. thanks for your help. oh and it is best to take it to a toyota dealer to do the rebuild? i dont know if id trust the regular shops to rebuild my japanese engine.

Exclamation 3.n0? ...seriously?

I'm confused. I'm new but I thought the 3.0 is the stronger more desireable engine... I have a 22RE in mine, but have been shopping to upgrade to the V6... isnt that the smart thing to do... I'm still stock on my 22RE, and was thinking that if I was gonna put $$ into performance parts I would rather do that with a bigger block that had more end result potential... can someone help clear this up for me. Thanks.

Also, is there a diff between the 88 V6's and the '89 V6's?

the 3.0 is NOT an upgrade to a 22RE in any way. Now, a 3.4 would be a massive upgrade IMO, but thats a whole new can of worms.

To the first post, I am sure that there are many shops in your area that can handle rebuilding a Japanese motors. These are not exactly "new" to the U.S. market. I am sure that a shop wont be amazed that you have a Japanese motor in your vehicle.

Yeah. I would never take my truck to a stealership. The only reason I would go there is for parts that you acant find elsewhere. If I couldn't do the work myself I would look up a reputable toyota specialist. Its hard to find a mechanic you can trust lol.

I'm seriously looking at a 88 V6 and was thinking about buying it this weekend... then I was gonna put my 86 4cyl up for sale... but now your reply is making me have second thoughts. help me learn what I'm missing here... is there a thread you could point me too that I havent found.

I'd go to engnbldr to get the parts needed. I went with him when I did the HG on my 22re and have heard nothing but good about him. IMOP I think you should just to it yourself if you have the time. You'll learn a lot and you will be happier with the build when you are done.

I would keep the 22re and not go to a 3.0. I have one of each and as of now I don't drive the 3.0 much I really enjoy the 22re. I have don't a wee bit to it as seen in the sig and I could not be happier with the lil 4 banger. I do know the 3.0 needs a bit of work yet and I'm slowly getting to it. But keep the 22re you'll be happy after a bit of work.
