3.0 water pump revisited for the 3rd time in 3 months

Well, I am in the process of putting the thing back together, I've taken a break for the night. My re-do of the water pump last weekend didn't aleviate the leak, so I got a new pump today. I just mounted it to the block, and the truck is timed correctly. I will put the rest together tomorrow. I could probably do the full t-belt and WP in about 2 hrs. with air tools. Well, maybe not 2 hours, but no more than 3 I would say. If anyone in the Richmond area ever needs assistance, I am more than qualified. Don't expect any help with the no. 2 idler, though!

It may be leaking more than you think. It's hidden behind the big timing belt cover, and that may be holding some of the coolant in. How many miles on the pump? An 89 could possibly have the original. It may just be time to replace it. Sounds to me, the pump is weeping, which means replacement.

Just curious if everyone is checking weep holes or are just assuming the gasket is leaking? Gotta check the hole. If any coolant is coming out of the weep hole, the pump is a goner.

You know, I guess I could have run it for a short time right before I pulled the WP off. I couldnt tell if it was weeping, or not. I assumed incorrectly that it was the gasket for the following reasons:

1. The pump was only 3 months old. I know you can get a bad one at anytime, but I had always had good luck with Beck Arnley parts.

2. I only used the paper gasket. I had always used some sort of Permatex.

3. It was getting very late when we were putting it back together and I wasn't really sure about how well the block was cleaned.

Sounds like maybe you were rushing things a little, but clearly you know you could have done a better job. Geeezz, I've never done that before... lol.

Hopefully you still have a warranty on the pump. Good luck and let us know how things turned out.
