Well, I run one.
It provides the obvious function, plus it looks hard core.
Like somthing out of Beyond The Thunderdome.

I built it, using 3" tube. Made the head, the carb adapter.
Note the trailer and pheasant feather.

Don't do enough deep watercrossings to justify one.
Looks real nice on an built expedition rig or a rig that radiates "off-road". On an otherwise stock rig (3rd gen for ex.) it looks pretty bad, like an eyesore that you can live without.
Functions...well, it helps ya go really really deep, but it also kills your intake path...obvious functions.

Do you run something like a deckplate to eliminate the long intake path problem?

I really like your rig, it's unique. Love the feather too.

 

Yes I have one.
Why: A snorkle is much cheaper than replacing a hydro locked engine
the stock air intake is right behind the drivers side headlight. Dip into a driver or mud hole and you can suck up enough water to hydro lock and pooch your motor.

I also have a custom snorkel. Why? Mainly because of the dust when following others in those summer trails...

My 4Runner is my DD and I wanted to have something custom but nice and I think I got it...





Look where a friend of mine hidrolocked his engine (V6) one month ago, it doesn't seem so deep...

Don't have one yet, but I will probably do an in-cab snorkel so it is not visible from the outside of the truck. I am not terribly crazy about the look of the external ones, I like to keep the truck clean looking.

I don't have one and don't figure i will...if i went deep enough to where a snorkel would help, my engine would die anyway, becasue none of my electrical is sealed. The water would rush in, and then my truck would die...I don't know enough about electrical to do that, so i won't bother with the snorkel.

For those of you with custom snorkels, how did you attach them to the pillar? Did you just screw them in?

 

I wouldn't get one. There are a crap load around here, yet there is no real deep mud, or water that you can cross (other then the river, but why would you?)

 

i use one here in florida between where i mud and the road to get there tends to be really swampy I've had a few water crossings where i crested the hood of the truck, but nothing where i wasn't in and then back out of the water almost immediately. Alas mine is not cool though because it doesn't leave the D-side fender

For those of you with in-cab snorkels... Don't they do noise? Also, what about the air current?

I've not listened to a gas engine with snorkel, but my turbo diesel makes a lot of noise when accelerating, the turbo whistling and aspirating is cool hehehe.

You can't argue against the "just in case" factor, and the looks are awsome.

Better to fry an ignition module than crack a block.

they do make a lot of noise when used.

but most of my driving is done with the deckplate open and a couple rags stuffed in the snorkel part. that makes it pretty quiet.

when unplugged and deckplate closed you can tell your friends you have a v8 haha

 

i think they are look sweet and do a good job of protecting my engine if i ever do cross some streams. and did i mention they look sweet?

 

I wheel at the badlands a lot.... pick the wrong hole on the bottom of green or orange and your GONNA lose an engine as the pit MIGHT bottom out at 6+ feet.... so you drop off the front dissapears... its not fun.

usually it isnt the total depth of water thats a problem, just the drop off leading up to the edge that will pitch your nose down into the drink just long enough for you to suck a nice healthy swollow of hydrolocking fun!

A snorkel is in my future but i have to design my parto exo cage first so that it doesnt interfear with it.

Yeah, snorkels are cheap insurance to prevent hydro lock.

I used a "J" hook, sealed in a grommet, sealed in a eyelet with a flat spot with holes in it.
I welded nuts to the top of the cab, and in front of the A pilliar, near the vent. cut some bolts short and bolted it in.

I f you run a snorkel inside the cab, its diffiucult to keep the windows defrosted, 'specially in winter time.

A full cage is plannded in my next few mods..

 

I totally disagree, it actually makes it easier to keep the window defrosted, by sucking the moisture out of the cab, besides you can block off the snorkel and breath using the deckplate mod, if there's no water to worry about.

 

Don't have one. But now I wonder exactly how to go about putting one on a carbed V-8. I think they definitely serve a valuable function.
