This morning I noticed I have a crack in my windshield (96 4Runner, 3.4L, 4x4).
I do not know when it happened, but I do know that it was not a result of anything hitting it.
So I guess it was stress related (I hope the frame of my truck is not moving too much!).
My question is: does anyone try to stop the crack from “growing” by drilling a hole in the windshields where the crack stops. And if yes: did it work well, was it worth the effort?

I never tried drilling a hole in one before but you can take it to a glass shop and they can fix it. They put some kind of epoxy in it to stop the chip from running. This was done to a car I had once and it worked good, I never had any problems with it.

I think there is even a diy kit sold auto parts places to do this with but I have never tried one.

Ditto.....don't bother with any DIY kits, they look bad and don't work well.

 

Repairs should be covered by insurance without a deductible or affecting rates. Sort of like free periodic checkups at the doctor. You will cost the insurance less if you don't drive around with a cracked windshield, or ask for the whole thing to be replaced when the crack gets really big.

I did call my insurance (All State) and they told me I will have to pay deductible to replace windshield.
And I already call around I can get new windshield with new molding for $175.00.
So it is not too bad.
The one thing bothers me is that crack appears to be “stress related”. And I just don’t understand why it happens.

 

Yup, mines cracked pretty good too. I'm going to have it fixed in the spring or summer.

 

You may have had something hit it and not know it. Windshields are most susceptible at the edges-if that is where it started. Expansion and contraction from heat and cold will cause the crack to run.

When I bought my truck it had a small crack near the rear view mirror. I paid $35.00 to have it filled and it still kept getting worse. I ended up replacing the whole windshield for $175.00.

 

HOw about a thread to see who has the most cracked, mangled windshield!

 

Mine has cracks that run from both sides to the middle, and then up into the top.

i cracked mine setting my steering wheel club :pat:

 

One time, I was eating a fudge bar while driving. I have a 5sp, so I held the bar in my left hand (as well as the steering wheel {not quite as important as the fudge at the time}). As I made a left corner, some chick almost ran me off the road. The fudge bar made a streak across the windshield, down the door, and across my leg. I am still not sure if this incident caused my windshield to crack. I do not think my insurance agent would believe it. I have never been compensated for the fudge I lost.
