Question off road wheels

On the rims topic, what are desired features to have in a good off road rim? Last weekend I got some dirt crammed btwn the tire bead and rim enough to flatten it...is this common, or do I (or my wheels, or both) just suck? My rims are some aftermarket deals the person I bought my 4runner from had put on there with BFG ATs, and my mechanic says they blow, so I tend to believe him, but don't know what to look for, and I wanna put 'em in some 32" or 33" BFG MTs
-Thanks

if you want to offroad, youre going to mess up your rims eventually. i would go the cheap route and invest in the black rock krawlers like you see in my avatar. they work great, look good and are super easy to clean. dont get me wrong, i would love to have some nice chrome rims, but they would be street purpose only. no reason in scratching up perfectly nice shiny rims.

hey man i got 31x10.5 bfgs mounted on15x8 mickey thompson classic II's with a 3.75 backspacing. i also have bushwacker flares and they stick out just past the flares so without the flares they stick out kinda far. but if you go to summitracing.com they have them cheap. i got mine for 94 bucks each rim. NOT bad for a polished aluminum rim.

aluminum isn't my first choice in an off-road rim. why? aluminum cracks, steel bends.

I bought aluminum for good street looks, I must say, it is true that aluminum does crack, but I have always run aluminum rims on every quad and dirt bike Ive owned. Steel bends with a relatively lower force when compared to cracking aluminum. Mostly all ATVs use aluminum wheels because they are lighter and stronger. I picked up some PRO COMP 1069s for $130 a piece( because they are 4" BS) IMO they are nice looking rims, but 16x8 with 4" BS is a little wide looking, I would have went with a 4.25" BS or 14.5" BS. They are decent so far except for the salt during the NJ winters, but, they will be cheap to replace.

If you need and or want a lightweight yet very strong wheel, get forged aluminum.

I actually just got me some rock crawlers--waiting on my bfg mt's to come in to get em on there! I had (have) these aftermarket wheels that someone put on before I bought it--I didn't know they sucked so hard til I got some dirt wedged between the bead and the rim causing a slow leak--when I went to take off the wheel, my socket was too big...hadta use a spark plug socket cuz the hole diameter in the wheel was tiny. anyway, enuf of those, time to move on to the steel.
