EDIT: 4runner Bikini Top ideas and what not

I was thinking the other day about making a bikini top for my 4runner. Anybody done it before? I'm not sure exactly how I would connect it to the front, and I was thinking about some detachable roll up side flaps or something, so that I could cover the area next to the back seats for anybody riding back there in the rain. I really want a bikini top by spring break, cause I'm def. not taking the hard top to florida, and I'd like some kind of cover from rain......soooo, ideas? what kinda material? is it feasible?

Heres a link to a member selling bikini tops. He used I believe the FJ40 bikini top and built the supports himself. My bro has it on his 1st gen and it is nice.

If your looking to do it really cheap, get a heavy tarp, put some eyeholes in it, and bolt it to the frame. Thats what I did for a few years. Then I called up a local boat dealer, and found out that they sale the material that they make boat covers out of for about 19.99$ per square yard. Then I got to thinking recently. Im going to make a top out of the boat covering for just the rear seats, then im going to cut down a peice of metal and bolt it over the bed of the truck, probably slap some fiberglass over the top of it, see if I cant develop a locking method so I can store things in the bed and not worry if they will be there when I get back to my car. Sorry, just kind of rambled there. Im going to take the measurements soon for my combo top, so if your interested PM me and ill send you the specs and the cost when I get it together.

I don't know if this is a good price: http://www.thepartsbin.com/sitemap/t...top~parts.html

but its cheap enough for me to afford. I'd like to have one since I cant shell out $1000 for the good full soft top. If he can still get the brackets and what not I'd proabably go for it. I'm sure I could make a soft top myself, but it would proabably more than what it costs to buy the FJ one.

do you not have that one from the pictures? I sent him a PM, hopefully he will go for making some more. I was thinking that you could just bolt the top in through some eye holes, but I'd rather be sure with the bracket.

Thats my old runner that my bro bought. He has the top. Basically it the front bolts to where the front of the hard top bolts into. Then there is a support the bolts onto the rollbar, and then I believe you put to hooks on the edges of the tailgate. It works great, wish I could have found it before I sold it to him. But I will be hopefully gettin a Runner in Jan, and this is definetly a mod I will doing if he makes it.

I have a jeep YJ bikini that I'm gonna experiment with. I think if you could just turn down the fabric like you were tucking it in, but put some holes with eyes on em where the screws go it might work. As far as the rear straps go, they could be bolted in to the hard top holes, or attached to the cargo loops if that didn't work. I'll fool around with it over christmas and see what happens.
