hi i just bought a 1985 shortbed, reg cab, 5 speed, 4 cyl, 2" body lift with 32" tires. anyways just saying hi and heres a couple questions if anyone could help...

- how do i know what engine i have? i hear all this about 22r and 22re and whatnot but im not sure what i have...

- i have a carburated engine and was wondering how people have fared with the carburators wheeling, as far as getting water in the engine and whatnot.

I think the re is injected...

 

carbed is 22R and FI is 22RE

 

You are correct, 22R is carbed and RE is fuel injected.

 

so im guessing i have the 22r? are these good engines? should i swap? i got a good deal on the truck so i have a little money to spend but not a whole bunch. i would LIKE a little more power but not sure what to do. thanks

 

Do a search for LC Engineering or Downey. A good header is probably the best bang for the buck.

You will soon find out that

 

22R and RE are practically bulletproof. not the fastest in the world, but when maintained will run forever.
power: headers, new exhaust, deckplate mod (SEARCH) are the typical for the engine. if your looking for something to out run other trucks, it wont, but like i said, bulletproof.

 

does it have enough power for offroading? im not talking serious rock crawling or anything, just mud maybe some hills etc....like does it have enoguh power to get itself unstuck? and what kinf of mods could i make to help better seal the engine from water, dirt, etc from getting into the intake? thanks guys youre helping alot

 

snorkel...tons of people run 22rs offroad with no probs, in a truck its all gearing not power. You're going to need tires more then power to get unstuck from mud, but then again you need to be able to turn em fast enough to get em to clean (again gears). One prob with carbs is lack of fuel when you get to big sidehills but that shouldn't be a prob until you get to obstacles like that.

 

oh ok....a snorkel....is that my best bet? cuz its my everyday driveer i didnt really wanna have a snorkel hanging out driving to the grocery store ya know. but thanks

 

snorkle wont hang out, goes up along the windshield.

and even if its a daily driver, you'd be find with it

 

oh that doesnt look bad i was definetly picturing something else. should a snorkel pretty much take care of it or are there other things to go along with that?
