Recomended Tranny Fluid

I'm about to change my Tranny fluid (00' 4Runner SR5 V6)...any have a recomended fluid? Should I go synthetic? or will standard work just as well (I use Mobil 1 syn oil). The Runner is used as my daily driver for commuting. The only "off-roading" it sees is the 6-7 camping trips I take each summer.

Give me some advice please.

I have been real happy with all my Amsoil products. I little more expensive, but I like their product and have zero complaints

Severe Duty is what I run

is it a 5 spd or auto?

assuming 5 spd, i recommend redline MT-90.

www.redlineoil.com

you can order it from

www.myoilshop.com

regardless of brand, i recommend a GL-4, rather than a GL-5, oil for the manual tranny. GL-5 oils tend to be too slippery for the synchro's in yota 5 speeds (at least the older ones like i have...may not be an issue in your 2000, though.).

here is a link to 4crawler's page outlining all the different fluids he uses. i use mostly the same stuff, personally.

I just switched out my stock tranny fluid for BG syn and I'm happy with it. My truck is used for the same thing as you, commuting and a few off road trips.

I agree with Stan. I used Amsoil to begin with and the shifting (on my 5 speed) was not what I hoped it would be. Taking advice here, I drained it and put Redline MT90 in it, and it is much better. I even overfilled it just a tad to help the shifting. Got that tip from here too.

Sorry should've specified....Automatic. Do they even make an manual tranny 4Runner (V6 SR5 pkg)?? That's what I wanted but never saw one in my many months of searching for a 4Runner.

Who sells Amsoil? Does Pepboys carry it?

Bob (Bob 98sr5) sells Amsoil and he is great to deal with, I can highly recommend him for buying Amsoil products.

Check your local parts stores as well. Not chain stores but some of the mom and pop shops may carry it.

Just remember, if you are going to a synthetic oil or Amsoil, you will have to do a complete flush of the unit. There can be unpleasant side effects when you mix the standard fluid with something else.
