truck tells me rear hatch is open, but its not

As of a few days ago, my dash light is on indicating that there is a door ajar, and the rear dome light is on as if the rear hatch is not closed, but it is.

2 questions

1- where is the sensor in the back door telling the truck the door is open/closed?

2- this day I also mistakenly left my keyfob out in the rain briefly. I doubt this has anything to do with it, but does anyone know if this could affect the RS3000? The remote no longer works, so I will have to program my backup one, but just making sure..

thanks YT

It is likely in the tailgate. Remove the access panel and snoop around inside. On my 1st gen, it is tied to the lock in the center of the tailgate as I recall.

Did you put a BL off recently or remove any of the plastic lining along the floor board? I know when I installed my BL, I accidently pinched one of the wires in the rear when I put one of the screws in.

unsually built into the latch. Take a closer look, you may see a micro switch or it may be completely integrated into the mechanism.

so the switch is in the actual lock? and where does this ground to.. would by chance have a schematic? this just started to happen, and may just be related to a bunch of rain/snow freezing in all the lock mechanisms...or maybe my ground is screwed. thanks

ive been doing some more reading but no one ever resolves this issue. Is the sensor in the external latch or internal?

The switch is connected to/part of the latch mechanism. I tore the latch apart and lubed everything but still the same symptoms. I am replacing the entire latch to see if that is the culprit.

You might check the actual parts that make electrical contacts and see what is preventing them from operating. Might just need some minor adjustments to make it work right. I think the Door Open switch is tied to the rear door lock button.

Ya i think its just cause it froze up pretty bad. The sensor thinks that the door is locked so this only fails to bring up an open door light, and the cargo light when on the door setting. the autollocks and keyless entry still work. I figure the sensor/button may be frozen down, so would go at it with a hair dryer outside..so the sensor is in the exterior lock mechanism then?

I have the same issue....

I see no one has posted to this thread since 2005. Well, I have the same issue with the rear hatch door ajar light on my 96' Toyota 4-Runner Limited. I had it looked at by the auto-body place after a 75 year old Eastern Hemlock fell on it (still recovering from that), and they oiled it up and can get it to turn off if they pinch the handle just right. Problem is it turns on again with the first bump i hit while driving. Any ideas on how to permanently resolve this?

Looks like I just joined the, my-door-ajar-light-won't-turn-off club. '97 runner SR5...has anybody actually figured out how to fix this dern thing yet? My tail light fuse also just started blowing. The only thing out of the ordinary is that I spliced in a wire to illuminate my relocated license plate, but all the connections check out and there's no exposed wire...help please!
