broke a birf found a weird part on the diff side of the knuckle

alright i'm sure anyone who has broken a birf can probably figure out what it was. i would post pics but i destroyed it getting it out. it's zinc color almost looks like a seal but no rubber and flatter. upon searching marlins site i think it might be the oil retainer for the diff? if that is the case my next question where the heck does it go? any help would be appreciated!!!

Dang, what an anticlimactic birfield break. Could the part be the inner seal, knuckle bearing race? Are there baffles inside the housing that could have broken off?

Looks like the felt wiper that cleans the balls as you turn. There is a metal ring that holds the felt on, I have seen them destroyed like that at the hammers.

the axle oil seal was still intact? they usually get pretty tore up, but don't have any holes...the three holes have me baffled...

I've had my front end apart twice a year since 2001 for inspection/RR and checking wheel bearings, and I don't recall anything like that in the birf cavity.

The ring that holds the felt wiper comes in TWO pieces....like half moons...so that ain't it and I have an 85 and rebuilt the knuckles like 2 months ago...that looks like one of the bearing races or seals and it grenaded...hard to tell what that is w/o a size comparison...put a penny next to it or something that we know the size of.

It also looks like FOUR holes to me if you look at both pics.

Roger Brown has an OEM axle breakdown pic on his website...that might help you.

it's about the size of the inner axle seal but it was not in the birf cavity it was in the axle tube..... i think it could be a oil retainer or slinger from the diff

ya it is just some type of oil retainer that goes just inside the iner axel oil seal. i saw mine in there when i put the 30 spliners in and one was lose and would spin but not move back and forth. you probly dont need it in there
