WANTED: your 2 cents.

Ok, im getting some money here in a few days, plenty enough for me to do something to the runner and not worry to much about it,

Now here is my dilema, depending on how much I get, I can winch it,(h/f of course) with new front and rear bumpers(badly needed) with a rear locker, or i can get a front and rear locker, and do some other small things(rear bumper?)

im building the bumpers myself, but im just stuck in a dilema if dual lockers is the way to go or not, its an 86 runner, 31's right now, i dont plan on going bigger till i have more money,

what do you guys think, any suggestions? I know that i have 400 right now in my pocket, and should be getting another 4 at least,

thanks
wade

rear locker and winch... that will get you into more than enough trouble especially with 31s.....

You ain't got enough to do what you need to do.

4.88 gears, front and rear if you want to run 31's, if you want to go bigger, start with a 5.29 gear set front and rear.

Go with a limited slip in the rear when you do, save the money on the winch for now and get a 60" Hi-Lift jack. That and about 150' of HMW rope will get you out of most fixes in the mean time.

Gear will typically run you about $800-1000 installed per gear box if that gives you an idea.

So far I am looking at going this route and so far have gotten the Hi-lift and will be working on making the roof carrier and bumpers to handle what it will need to be able to do. The front and rear bumpers will be set-up with a receiver hitch to enable us to move trailers around as well as move the winch from front to rear.

Wade, you'll be fine with your stock gearing running 31's. Post some pics if you ever get any mods.

Yeah, i already have 31's, gearing is fine for me, as it should be.

I plan on starting a build thread after i get my camera working,

800-1000 per axle is quite steep for gears to man, shop around, you can get spools with 5.29s already in the 3rd for around 700 from marlin,

jimabena, i think that im going to do as you say, locker and winch should get me into more then enough trouble on 31's, as time progresses and i get more money i plan on going to 33's but probably not bigger,

a sas is in the works sometime in a few years from now. not anytime soon though.

anyone else have anything?

why dont you drive down here and leave it with me.....you can take the bus.....wait, benton city doesn't have a bus system. Ok, get a horse. You'll save up more money without the Runner, and by the time i bring it back to you, you'll have enough saved up for your SAS!

Looks like we're in the same boat for rigs (86, 22re, 31's) Here is my plan. I've already got BJ spacers up front and 3" rear lift springs so I should have all the height I need. I just bought an extra 3rd member off e bay and plan to put an Aussie in it. I can live with the 4:10 gearing with the 31's which are pretty new for now. Once that is in I can wheel locked and learn what I'm doing while I collect parts and clean up my old 3rd. I'd like to get 33's with 4:88's and ARB front and rear eventually but that is going to take some time and I only want to tear down once so I want to gather everything together first. Thats why I figure it will be good to at least throw in a lunchbox with the stock gearing for the time being. As Jimabena noted, that should get me into enough fun for now. Plus I figure when the time comes, I shouldn't have any trouble selling the 3rd with the lunchbox as a unit.

front locker...I'd stay away from it

Definitely go with a rear locker, Aussies are great lockers, I have a friend who runs one on his DD and it works great on and off road. Running 31s and a rear locker, I think you will find it will get you many places and you will NEED rock sliders with the stock clearance...that locker will put you in situations where you will hit the rocker panels so I would definitely get sliders and maybe even a rear bumper before winch..

I run stock 4.11 gears and I have 31/10.50's....Yeah they work, I get 17-18 MPG....

But the pulling power isn't worth the horse feces everyone is talking about.....I hope to get a tach installed one of these days to see exactly where everything is sitting for RPM.

If the future is bringing even bigger tires...5.29 gears at a minimum...4.88 if you want more daily driver. If you plan on towing anything, go a little bigger gear.
