How much do you guys think a solid axle swap is professionally done?

 

To help you out this time.... it would probably cost 10k or more if its done right. Its costs most people 5-8k to do it themselves.

seriously now thats kinda high. look to spend around $1500- $3000

 

Marlin does the labor for $1400. Do what you can yourself. I'm in the process of an SAS. I just finished rebuilding the axle. I'm having the hangers welded on by a local shop and the driveshaft custom made. The rest is just grinding and wrenching. Lots of details can be found on Pirate4x4.

 

there is a guy on here thats posted within the last day or so selling a whole SAS front end with steering kit and no third for $900

If you do it yourself, and shop for deals on everything, or buy used, it can be done easily under $3,000 (longs, e-locker or ARB, regear...etc.). Then like someone posted above, Marlin charges $1,400 in labor. I have seen labor for an SAS run anywhere from $300-$2,000.

 

if you live anywhere near NC i'll do it for alot less than the $1400 marlin wants

 

I guess I forgot it was a 2nd gen which companies already make kits for. Still, I would say it will cost more than 3k.

 

By asking that question, I suspect that you don't have the equipment or the know how to do it yourself. I don't know where you live but if you're in CA, you can go to Marlin, He's the best. I think you're looking at around 6K or more. If you want ARB vs lock right, that's gonna make a difference. Some thing to think about also is do you want to do it right the first time or add stuff later. Ex. do it without lockers, diff armors. run with used semiballed tires. ......

 

Its gonna be alot more than $3,000 for sure. I have been looking into this for my 1990 4runner for two years now. I have studied everything and I plan on doing it right the first time. Figure 1500 for the front kit from marlin, 1400 for installation. The rear will probably be 1000 installed with shocks etc. There is so much little stuff you have to remember like brake lines, driveshafts, etc. And, if you are doing an SAS you probably will be running 35"+ tires so gears is another 1,000. I plan on spending about $6000-$7000 and I will be doing the work myself or with friends help. But I am doing f&r ARB's, 5.29's, High pinion front 3rd member, marlin front kit, 63" chevies in the rear and 36" iroks. Good luck.

why do you guys spend so much if you are doing the work yourself. gears=1000
learn to set them up yourself, there are plenty of writeups all over the internet. driveline the ifs one should work. I have used them before an have had no problems. the marlin sas hanger kit is less than $200 not including shipping, then you can couse what springs you want to use. im all about saving money and building most everything maybe thats why I think it is cheaper.

 

because to do a SAS right you have to spend a lot of money. Gears are not the only expense on an axle. The axle I have under my truck was over 20 years old when it went under there. I replaced everything. Every bearing, balljoint and seal. That adds up. Not to mention the gears and then the locker. New u-joints. All the wire wheels I used cleaning the grunge off the axle and all the paint I used to make it look new again. New knuckles and steering arms. I didn't pay a dime for labor but my swap was done right and was expensive. Do one first, brag later...

how was i braging? i've done a few sas. sure its going to cost a lot if you buy everything new also i did not know that you need new gears and lockers to get the job done all the thread starter asked was how much it costs to have it done. there is nothing in his post that asks about lockers, gears and u-joints but whatever...

 

So you seriously think this guy was asking how much it would cost to do a SAS with the same size lift he has now so he doesn't need to do anything out back. With the same size tires so there is no need to regear. Without a locker, because why would anyone want to throw one of those in while they have an axle out of the truck. Without rebuilding the axle, I mean its only 20 years old what could possibly be wrong with it. Stock steering, why not everything else is.

If you thought all this then I guess you are right, it can be done as cheaply as you say it can by a pro... :pat:

I don't think he's got the set up to do it. I tried with mine, and it was a disaster. Unless you really know what you are doing, you MUST have a shop press, and it will take you HOURS AND HOURS just to set up the gears. Zuk was saying it takes him a couple of hours, and he does gears all the time. It took a professional almost 10 hours to do mine, (then again i probably made it harder for him) But still, gears and a limited slip cost me 1300 total. Locker will be more.

 

Fox Fab in Rhode Island wants around $1200 plus parts to do it...

 

If you have to ask about how much it costs you can't afford it.
