Some help with roof rack spare tire mounts

I am planning on buying a proline safari rack, but they do not have a spare tire mount for their baskets. Does anyone have any ideas to fabricate or buy a mount that would work with this type of safari rack???

I want to be able to use a security lock for the spare tire on the roof as well.

Help?
Thanks !!!

i just took a huuge bolt, drilled through my rack and used that for my tire mount. for the lock, i took a bicycle lock and used that. I just need to figure out a way to keep the tire down without using bungee cords. I have surco btw

Throw a picture up if you dont mind... I am curious to see the set up.

I too have been pondering on what kind of bracket I can use to hold the tire down without using the old bungee cord routine.

you could get a LONG u-bolt. you can't drill the proline. i have one. the supports are too thin and wouldn't hold up if you drilled them.

also, if you lock the tire to the rack, what's going to prevent a thief from just taking the whole rack w/ the tire attached? it's simply bolted to your factory rails via some custom u-bolts w/ brackets, so if they wanted it bad enough, all they have to do is take the rack w/ them. you can lock it to your factory rails, but then they could take the rails too...

the point is, if you're worried about theft, then why don't you have a lock on your FACTORY spare tire winch???

i cant find my digi cam right now. I have an alarm system so any vibrations will cause the alarm to go off. I also have air horns which are annony and reallly loud. If the intruder still wants the rack after the alarm goes off, he can have it

I figured that locking the spare on the roof will keep the kids from getting a new tire since its in plain view sorta like eye candy

I figured it would be bothersome for a thief to undo the entire safari rack with a spare tire locked on it. (hard to carry, etc)

of course, if they want it bad enough, I guess I am screwed either way.

I will probally be satisfied if I can find some type of bracket that will use a huge wing nut that can fasten down the spare tire...thats the most important for me. I really want to stay away from bungee straps.

Rocky,
Can you post a picture of it... I am going to try and compare with the yakima spare tire mount with the proline to see if a yakima mount would work on a proline...

Thanks !!!

Dont know much about the rack but you may want to contact the builder of the rack about strength.I saw one in a wreck go flying off the truck and landed about 50ft away.Lucky it didnt hit anyone.By law you put it on your responsible if it gose flying off!

I have the Yakima spare tire mount for mine as well. It has a large plate that should be easy to attach to any roof rack. (approx 4x10") it's been a while since I looked at it. Anyway, comes with some cheap things to attach it to the yakima round bars... I ditched those, went to the hardware store got 4 small nuts and bolts to go through the existing holes in the bottom plate, drilled through my rack (Surco) and bolted it down.

The plate has a metal hoop welded on it and there is a J bolt that runs up to the top plate.

My only complaint about this spare tire mount is that the pieces of metal that you put the lock through are not all that thick... If I was a thief, I would cut through them before cutting a standard master lock padlock. They are thick enough though that you would need some type of tool to defeat it.

Thanks for the info... I think whatever mount I use, I will have to fabricate a piece of metal to "sandwich" the mount and roof rack together to form hopefully a strong bond between the two to keep the spare from flying off, etc. Any pics, etc would help me alot.

It'll be another week or so before I can get the pictures, but I do think with minor modifications (if any) you could fit the Yakima spare tire mount on any roof rack.

I'm 5'3 1/2" and it's not as hard to get up there as you'd think. I just climb up the side.

Yeah, I am thinking that a homemade mount would work or a name brand could probally be fabricated to work on a proline... I guess I will just order the proline and see what I can do with it and go from there...
Thanks though..
