While off-roading last weekend at the eastern Idaho sand dunes, I managed to tow out a full-sized Chevy Suburban with a dead engine using my 94 4Runner. Just like to mention that to all those who think the 3VZE doesn't have any muscle.

Anyway, while poking around in the engine last night I removed the air cleaner hose from the intake manifold, and noticed what looked like engine oil in the throttle body. It was rather dirty, so I wiped it out with a rag. Im just curious to know if this is normal or bad? I also found oil in the air flow meter attached to the air filter. Is it coming from the breather hose thats attatched to the drivers side cam cover? This is the first time Ive seen this since buying the truck 2 years ago. I do have a K&N FIPK installed (which was a waste of $$$ btw). Could it possibly be some oil from the filter? I have used the cleaner kit on this filter before. Any ideas?

Most likely oil from the filter. Not sure about K&N, but Amsoils come way over-oiled from the factory.

 

its oil from the filter or backspray from the pcv..... when the pcv vents back into the intake stream to aid in combustion, it carries oil in vapor form.... most liekly the source of accumulated oil....

Must be, I have an oem air filter and get a little oil in the intake.

 

This is definetly the source of your build up.

 

You can make a catch can very easily to remove some of the oil that gets by. You do have to watch the level in there after a while but it works quite well.

Just go buy a litre paint can and a little hose and a couple fitting and you in for about 10 bucks all in for a homemade one. Way cheaper.
