Custom alloy heat shield for intake

So I deceded what I am going to make in my advanced welding class, the mother of all heat shields for my intake. I am going to box off the whole front corner fo my engine compartment with TIG welded polished aluminum so my intake won't suck in hot air off the exohst manafold any more. Sound like a good plan? took me forever to get the metal cut out so it would fit exactly in place.

Here is a picture of what I have so far. The 1/2 circle cutout is for access of the coil wireand the square cutout is whare the airflow meter sits:

Cool, so you guys like it hu? Mabe I could make a few extra ones since it is only mid term and this is my final project.. We will so how my welding skills come together. I think it will be pritty sweet once it's all done and installed. It's hard to tell from the picture but the one piece is flat on once end so it will weld to my intake support brackett while the other end is curved for added volume and structural integrity. The hardest part will be welding the tabs on in just the right places for it to bolt up.

Wait, this wouldn't really work on my 3.0L... I might have to fab something up myself.

Yea, right you are. I do beleve it is a worth while project to retreve some lost HP, especially in city driving or off road driving conditions.

Yea, the welding part is still to come but I'm the best in my class and I'm fairly confident with my skills. My biggest worry is getting the bolt holes on in exactly the right places. Probably be done next week. I will post the final product when it's done and perhaps I will make another one or two just to stay busy.

i was thinking about doing something similar, but also relocating the intake above the wheel well not only to make it less prone to water, but room for a york compressor for onboard air, mines a 2.7 and theres a huge empty area above the passenger wheel well

Looks GREAT! Good job. Your TIG welds will only get better with practice. Aluminum is tougher than steel to get pretty welds on.
