Markers not flashing... Help please...

Hi,

My name is Troy and I'm new to this board. About a month ago I bought a 1988 4x4 3.0L pickup and have been browsing on the sidelines for a few weeks. I'm not much of a mechanic, however, I've managed to put in new NGK spark plugs/wires and change the oil/filter. I've noticed that my front markers and rear markers are not flashing. All of the other turn signals are working. The hazard warning/turn signal flasher fuse is good and I've checked my screws which hold the light assemblies to the body, and there is no rust to suggest a problem with grounding. I'm wondering if it's the hazard warning/turn signal flasher unit that is faulty, but I'm hesitant to buy a new unit unless I can be sure it's faulty.

Any suggestions for a diagnosis and fix? TIA for any help I can get.

The upper lights by the headlights are just markers, they don't flash.

Troy, Welcome to yotatech!!! I don't quite understand your post, you are concerned cause your MARKER lights arent flashing, but your turn signals are, correct?
I don't think marker lights are suppose to flash, unless you wire them in with your turn lights. Can you please clarify and maybe I could or someone else could help you out. Again welcome to YOTATECH!

Yes, they are correct your marker lights aren't supposed to flash, at least theydon't on my truck. Now if you are indeed talking about your "Turn signal" lights, then just unscrew it and make sure the bulb is seated all the way in. I had that problem with mine recently after I washed it.

The bulb popped out ever so much to just make it not work.

marker lights dont flash, unless you have them wired up to do so... in the stock configuration the side markers do not flash

if your turn signals dont flash, then you probably have a blown fuse or relay if none of them are working....

Talking

Wow!!

I didn't expect this much help so quickly. Thanks for all the replies. Silly me... I just assumed that the markers would flash, especially the front ones because to me that was what I thought they were supposed to do. The turn signals on the front lower valance work fine. Having said all this, what are those large front markers supposed to do anyway?!!

TIA, Troy

Hey, someone else from my neck of the woods, welcome to Yotatech.
If you're talking about the lights just to the outside of the headlights they're just parking lights/side marker lights. They're probably so big because Transport Canada requires marker lights to be visible from the sides, and also to match the size of the headlights.

Hi there! Welcome. I have a problem with my HAZARD lights. They don’t work, Fuse is good, Turn signals work just fine… Could it be the relay? This is on my 1994 4runner.

Thanks!

Looking at the wiring diagram there is no relay in the hazard circuit. The same flasher is used for turn signals and hazards, so it should be OK. The fuse for the hazards also powers the horn, so if the horn works it is OK. The only thing that I see could be the problem is the switch.
If you want a copy of the wiring diagram send me an email address.

Thanks, I was thinking switch too, but when i press it in, the turn signals don't work any more. I'm going to to try swapping the relay from my 90 into the 94. (i hope it's easy to get to)

I just had to revisit this thread. It started out with my first post trying to get advice on a lighting problem and after a couple of months I've managed to do far more to the truck than I had thought at the time. This website rocks!!!

The support from this forum has been phenomenal. I've managed to do the following repairs with the help of board members such as:

replace speedo cable
replace PCV, valve cover gaskets
fix up a broken sway bar bracket
replace brushes in my alternator
clean out my starter
replace plugs, rotor, cap, wires
change out dash lights
replace oil and filter (tougher on a 3.0L)
lube mysterious knuckle arms
flush out rad and clutch fluids

Troy

Very nice, thanks for the link. I noticed that the link on the bottom of the page was broken.

Fixed, just Google for the "side_marker" in the URL and found the new location. Darn people keep moving their pages around and never leave a pointer or tell folks about the new location.
