SteveO's front bumper

Well, I finally got the front tube bumper built, and what took the most time was getting it posted. On my website is a page with a few pics and some details.

Very nice work Steve! I really like how you tucked the winch in tight.
Hey, where did you mount the control box?

Thanks,

The control box is mounted inside the engine bay....security. This way nobody can do any midnight shopping for the synthetic winch rope.

As well, I built a locking plate that covers the Free-spool handle, to keep people from free-spooling the winch line out. I'll have to get a pic of this as well. Actually, I have a pic somewhere, I just need to find it......

Got fancy and painted it, eh?

Looks really good.

Glad to see you are back on the net here and there. We missed you in Arizona. I now share your disgust for IFS as well as the lacking parts to solve the problem.

yeah, Indeed, I would have liked to have been there, but more pressing issues were on the table. For example, I started a new position at the National Lab, so I thought I shold prep for that.

Indeed, IFS is a drag. I don't have the dough to put in the solid axle yet, but one day.........

Right now I'm planning a week long trip to the CanyonLands Natl Park. My dad is coming down for a week so we can run the White Rim trail, and the Maze. So, I have lots and lots of things to fix. By October, I'll have the rear tube bumper built, a better track bar (I broke the last one), and lots of other mods......

Forum95, thanks.

Tahts what I thought you did with it. I would be interested in seeing the locking plate that covers the freespool handle. Might have to make one of those myself.

Very nice Steve! That's probably the best looking and functional tube bumper I've seen for our rigs.

very nice, any chance of getting more detailed plans??
I might try and get somebody local to fab me that design..

Edit : Or how much would you charge to make another one of those?

More pics

Mikronized: Building another one, wellllllll, I guess I could sell you mine, and then build another one. Price, I dunno, we could discuss it.....

I finally got more pics of the bumper with the locking plate. I think this is the coolest part of the bumper. I can lock the winch handle in the locked mode (as opposed to free spool), and lock the hook to the same pad lock. What this does is keep anybody from turning the handle to free spool, and taking off with the synthetic line. Its just too darn easy for the 1AM shoppers. Granted anybody can steal anything, but on this item, they are gonna have to work for it, which is just deterring them to the next easier rig. Here are some pics, and there are more on my site:

Maybe I'm just paronoid, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks Bob,

Military; Secure everything!

I forgot to mention one other thing. I put the control box inside the engine bay. This will prevent any other, better equiped, midnight shoppers from using a winch remote hand switch to power out the rope.

These welds are not structally important, and I was getting a little impatient. The welds that this statement was referring to are:

which are important, especially when winching.

i would put some kind of cover over the power cables to the winch, if someone has one of those jump start boxes, they can directly hook up to the winch and unwind it
