Pics of my Turbo Diesel 4x4 4Runner w/ 3rd seat!!!!
OK, this is not my 4Runner, i rented it for a week when i went to costa rica over christmas. this IS a 2003 model, toyota hasn't changed the models down there yet. we requested a 4x4 4runner, but when they pulled the car around the building, i immediately recognized the diesel sound, the i saw the emblem on the rear door that said it was a diesel. the other thing i noticed was that it was equipped with a 3rd folding bench seat in the back, which we took out to make room for our luggage.
when we got in and pulled away, the rattling sound at idle went away and all you heard was the whine of the turbo, it sounded like a semi rolling down the street. the top end of this thing was completely gutless, but the bottom end was unbelievable. i first noticed it when i was driving up a steep mountain road. in third gear up that hill at 1,300 rpm's the thing just kept accelerating!
the cluth was so easy to drive with all the torque it had. it was easier than driving my honda civic's 5spd when i had it. i don't know the power rating of the engine but it was a 3.0L turbo. after converting the kiters and kilometers, its fuel economy ended up being about 24 miles per gallon, and that was driving up and down windy mountain roads in low gears, not highway driving.
the cars down there were really different, everything was diesel, and almost everybody drove compact suvs or 4 door pickups. they even had diesel tacomas (hilux) and i saw a new 4 door, 4x4, diesel ford ranger. until a few years ago, they were even still making the old style land crusiers, and it seemed like every other person drove one of these.

the diesel was pretty loud at idle, cruising you didn't hear it, and under accelerating it was extremely loud, sounded just like a semi. had no horsepower, but TONS of torque, and over 24mpg
as far as the rear seat goes, there were recessed parts in the floor where it attached to, i don't think you could retrofit that toyota factory seat, but maybe someone makes an aftermarket one. and no i didn't get a pic of the seat, i wish i would have...

The trick with the diesel engine is to keep the revs up if its a maual that is and you will find that it moves a whole lot better.
Just about everything i have had has been diesel and thrashing themhas been a hobby especialy as they were company owned and maintained

My turbo cuts in at around 2500 rpm the little light on the rev counter lights up and you can feel it start to pick up a bit quicker,
from what i know about turbos is that if it aint whistiling it mught be a bit worn out it may just need a bit of a stripdown and clean /lube.

Golly! Now I thought that light was a warning light! If I remember correctly, my hand book says to stop and call a Toyota dealer if it comes on! I don't here a whistling but I do "feel" the turbo kick in. Now I stand to be corrected, but I'll check my handbook tonight.
When it first did come on, I was reving the fairly cold engine hard and cornering at the same time: I pulled over, switched off and called a Toyota Service bay - they told me it was probably a temporary starvation of oil supply to the the turbo and if I restarted, and drove normaly that the light should not come back on.
I did and it didn't. I have experienced the same thing twice since, on the the same corner, and the result has been the same. So I say to you, I'll check my handbook and get back to this list tonight.
